Mk5, is that the version before the current one? If so i easily dispatched many of these (150bhp iirc?) in my old Cup.

What is the spec of your cup? I.e. standard etc.

What miles and what condition do you think the engine is in also ?

  clio 172 cup
mk5 golf is the latest one close to 200bhp i think?
my cup is standard 44000miles and apart from speedo keep going off car has been perfect

Ah right, well would you not be expected to be beaten..... ish? Also they can be remapped for good gains being turbo charged.

  clio 172 cup
o and came off a roundabout coming home side by side with a 197 nailed it in 2nd wasnt racing the 197 but think he decided to try catch me up and he was closing in on me in every gear bit by bit until he turned off

  A4 DTM/iceberg cup
i can staple myself to each of the cars above (if standard) but have to be quick on the power! some are faster than others dispatched a 52 plate cup on the motorway a few months back!

Sounds like you might just have a weaker one m8....they vary sooo much it is amazing. Has it been serviced recently? My m8 had a std Cup and it was due a good service. We went for a play and I set off behind him..from 40 -120 I pulled back the 4 car gap and probably pulled another 5 after that. Mine is far from std but it isn't that much quicker than a good std example

The golf mk5 is 200bhp/280nm torque or 230bhp/300nm torque if the gti edition 30. Both are 2.0 5cylinder turbo engines.

The GTI 30 would prob pull on you in every scenario as standard especially once moving due to the extra torque. All's it would take is a remap and i would imagine both would pull on you convincingly.

You sure they are 5 cylinder? I thought they were FSI lumps were 4 pots?

Not so long ago I pulled up at a set of light (2 lanes) with no on in the other lane until a mk5 gold gti pulled up next to me with a lad driving and a fit as f**k bird in the passenger seat. Now I have heard good read-ups on the mk5, and to be honest had no intention of racing him.

That was until he started reving his engine like a chav in a saxo, as I glanced over he was looking and his bird smiling at me, so I thought why not? Lights went to green and then both went for itand the mk5 was in my rear view from the word go and getting further away!

I should also point out that all my cup had in the way of engine mods were:-

*cat back prospeed
*ITG Maxogen induction kit
*omex 600 mappable ecu

It gets me thinking just how I would have done against the golf with the mods I have got now? I'm sure I will let you know one day soon!!

i might be wrong on the 5cylinders, might be getting mixed up with the mk4 which was 5cylinders.

  clio 172 cup
cup is fast off the line but from a rolling start 2nd or 3rd gear i think there slow due to lack of torque

  2002 172
the old audi's s2, s4, s6 and quattro etc are 5cyl tubbys. mk4 golfs are 4 pot, only the v5 is a 5cyl model.

not sure about the new golf though

  Audi TT 3.2 V6
the mk4 gti was defo available with a 1.8 5cylinder turbo engine producing 150bhp or 180bhp in the anniversary model.

  172cup
i think my cup is one of the faster standard ones... only other std cup that has kept up/gone faster than mine is tim's off of here

never had problems with any of the above cars mentioned.

  Nippy white cup
not 5 cylinder m8..1.8t a four pot...I had a 150bhp one and it defo wasn't 5cylinder. There was a 150 and 170 bhp V5 model tho

i had a play with a mk5 golf gti needless to say i did get passed him not to quickly so he had time to read the 1.2 badges on the side

  Golf 7R
Never has a problem with these cars as said above. You must just have a poor example, or mines just a standard quick one!

No it wasn't. They do a 2 litre V5 engine, circa 170hp.
The 1.8T BAM engine used in the Anni golfs and standard Gti is 5 valves per cylinder NOT 5 cylinders.

ive just been scouring the net trying to proove you 2 wrong...i stand corrected. the only 5pot golf engine was the v5. lol

edit - after reading further thats the confusion cleared up by the post above. they were 20v engines but 4pots with 5valves per cylinder as stated above.

ill shutup now im making myself look dumb lol

The 1.8t lump you are referring to that has been fitted in the Golf, Leon, Octavia, TT, A3 etc. is definitely not 5 cylinders, it's 4. The reason many people think of it as having 5 is because it has 20 valves, but this is because each cylinder has one extra inlet valve rather than the usual 2 in, 2 out (i.e. 16v) - 3 inlets were found to be the optimum for max inlet flow when considering valve stroke etc etc... The 2.0 FSI in the MkV GTi is also a 4 cylinder.

When it comes to comparing performance to other cars on the road, starting speeds make all the difference. The performance of many cars is very similar, your GTIs, VXRs, STs, CUPs and other "quick" models are, in the grand scheme of things, very close performance wise (I'm thinking more about straight line than handling/braking). With that in mind, if you come up against someone on the road who want's to play you always have to consider that all they have to do is hit the accelerator half a second before you and then that demands that you have enough of a performance advantage to firstly recover that half second, then be able to accelerate faster than the rate they are so you can begin to pull a gap. By the time all of that has happened you'll be up to silly speeds for the road and normally by that point somebody has lifted anyway. Driver skill aside, I'd say it's easier to get a true feel for comparing car performance on track when in theory you are flat out all the time and you are comparing all aspects of performance (grip, braking, handling, straightline speed) - not to mention the fact that it's more sensible to push a car on track anyway.

  178hp 172 Cup
yeh as said the only thing i can think of is that ur cup needs a good service or u got a bad one dude!!

my cup i would say it quite a good one!! my mates trophy runs over 190hp and i hav no problem keeping up till silly speeds!!

cannot say i hav ever played with an Rx8 or Golf but i hav played with a 1.8T A3 ( similar to the golf ) which was tuned and running around 220-230hp and we where dead level till silly speeds!! the driver of the A3 was very surprised!!!

lol mine was missing a cylinder then cus am dead cert it had only 4..it was 18 .20 valve turbo mk4...no wonder it was slow;)

Another point to mention is that the MK5 Golf GTI might have been a DSG one which means perfect upshifts every time in sport mode!

You'd have had to be on your A-game with the gear changes to beat him.

  Turbo LY R27
Ive over taken a rx8 in my old 182, very slowly but still did him. Raced focus st and new gti before and there was no difference to 110 at all in my R27. Dont under estimate the 197 lads, engines are bedding in good now LOL;)

1st week i bought the car i raped a audi 1.8turbo but thats the same engine as a mk4 golf not a mk5 i think:S

  Clio MK 4
ye i've realised how guttless my 172 is 60mph up wards. its shocking. Had a bit of a play with this type r the other night 20mph to 80 and he was right on my bumper all the way. i'm sure he let go at one point as he was getting close. i thought i'd be equallish with a type r. first real contest iv had and has made me feel like i have a slow car lol.
