re-calibrate speedometer?

  Ultra Red Clio 197
Is it possible to recalibrate the speedometer so it displays the correct speed whilst driving.. for example.. when mine reads at 60mph is doing more around the 45mph mark.. I tried it with a sat nav and it gave back similar readings... I know that speedometers are never 100% accurate, but I was wondering if anyone knows how I could fix it, or where I could go to get it fixed...

At first I thought it was the 17" alloys affecting it, so I now have 16" 182 wheels, but it hasnt improved..

has anyone any suggestions? :approve:

naa, its 2001! so no chance of a warranty still existing! all I want to know is if its possible to fix, where would be the best place to go to get it fixed and how much is it likely to cost me?

stop driving pissed, and things may seem a little more accurate, hehe

lol...yea...

I mentioned it when I was at a renault garage a couple of weeks ago and the guy said to get it re-calibrated... though how much is that gonna cost?

i had the same problem in a past car but never got round to sorting it properly - someone recommended a company called Speedy Cables of Islington/London but i couldn't tell you how much they charge - might be worth a quick call once the break is over - their number will come up if you Google.

you obviously need to dismantle the dash, remove the binacle send it off though. it's a fairly specialist service but there may be someone closer who'd be able to do it all for you.

It could be your abs ring that's playing up, I'm assuming it's electronic like the 182?

ah - sorry - i was assuming Clios were cable drive. i don't know but guess it might not be necessary to remove/dismantle the binacle in that case - although it certainly is for mechanical speedo correction.

The mk2 ph2's are electronic afaik and get the speed signal from the abs ring.

thanks guys! so what needs to be done to fix this fault? Should a local garage be able to fix it or will I have to visit the dreaded renault! lol..

assuming it is on the abs ring? the key phasor which is the peaks and troughs i.e. on off should have so many on/ offs per second. I assume this is converted to give mph.

Maybe one of the holes it full of s**t? Just a idea. Not worked on the system though.

Could be a shot ABS ring, won't matter whether one of the troughs is full of s**t as it won't give a pulse anyway unless it was filled with iron filings or something.

renault were gonna charge me £85 for a diagnostic on my mk1 then add 2hours labour charge(£45 an hour) but for me it was my small alloys putting it out so i just changed them instead. and 17 inch alloys on ur car would make the speedo more accurate if anything.....so its obviously 1 of the above.

Nope not realy if its out by a lot then you have a broken gearbox sensor or system if you have a car with a gearbox sesnor or the abs ring or computer is faulty or the dash is check with thi trick

it all works ok on the dash front as thats simple and free but most likly the ABS ring is broken they cna be bought seperate form Renault although manay dealers cannot find the parts.

You cannot realy unless the speedo is a set amount out ie 20mpg all over and that showns a faulty dash not a mis positioned dials realy.

Most likly the ring is damaged more often its the fornt ones which break but I've een rear ones fail. they just get dirty and corrode etc.

decided to bring one of my old threads back from the dead just incase its of any help to anyone...

to cut a long story short my speedometer has never been accurate since I purchased the car and its only a year and a half later that its finally fixed.. (accidently!!)

Dads mate had a look at the car and noticed the abs ring on the passengers side shaft was broken in 3 places. I got a replacement on ebay and he fitted it. He then said that I might as well get another one for the drivers side so that both were changed at the same time. I did this though 3 months passed before he got another chance to fit it as he lives quite far away from me. anyway, he took the old one off and realised it had a ring with 44 teeth fitted, the passenger side had 26 teeth... sometime in the cars life it must have had a new shaft fitted to the drivers side but with the wrong type of ring. A 44 tooth ring would normally be found on other renaults or clios such as a 182 i think... anyway he fitted the new ring I got with 26 teeth and low and behold its fixed my speedometer reading!

Funny thing is I asked at my local renault garage what might be causing the problem and they told me that it was because I had 182 cup alloys on the car which is a common problem when bigger alloys are fitted! and that there was nothing I could do about it!

so if anyone else has this problem... get the abs rings checked to make sure they are the same on both sides!

Cant describe how happy I am now to finally get to the bottom of this now!
