really need help getting my mac online!

  none, just walk
im currently using my ibook g4 on my neighbours wifi connection (with permisson)

im on tiscali broadband, i was using a speedtouch usb modem on my pc, so when it came to using it on my mac its just not working. Ive just gone out and bought a adsl zoom x6 ethernet modem. Ive used the correct install, plugged in all the wires, and now ive got the ethernet light, wlan and dsl lights on. But the internet light is red? ive looked EVERY where to see how i can fix this and i cant find anything! its really doing my head in cos i feel like a leper having a mac cos nothing is working with it! i put my tiscali username and password in the relevent place on installing the thing and its still not working! its so frustrating! I had a macbook before and had the same problem but was told this was cos i had a intel mac? now ive got a g4 and its still not luck! help!

any advice on how i can fix this- or if i should take this back and get a different modem if its not going to work with my mac?

HELP please

So you are hooking up to your neigbours wifi with a wireless device plugged into your mac but the device wont find the net?

Have you checked your version of OSX against the devices requirements and gone through the settings a few times to check it is all fine. Did you restart after installing everything?

I have Airport cards, not an Airport extream but the older one.

My Powerbook has one and I've never had a single problem getting online on any network. My latest MacPro just found the net as soon as I switched it on, that's with a BT home hub. I honestly doubt the problem is your mac to be honest.

My old G4 is going to be used with an Airport card now by my missus as we've no way to get wires to it. I spent half an hour in PC World the other day looking at Wireless devices only to walk away when there was no firm evidence that what I would buy would work with the set up she has, so we decided to get an old Airport off ebay.

The red light on your "internet" connection on the router is the clue.

You've not put the correct login/password details into the router, double, no, triple check them and try again.

yeah im using the neighbours wifi to be on this site now. This is the only way to get online, using the modem i bought gets me no where, the red light on the modem for the internet really has me stumped cos ive put the tiscali username and password in about 10 times and its still not working, i phoned up tiscali and i might as well of been phoning up for a pizza cos its safe to say they didnt have a clue what i was talking about. I asked them if the information i was entering was the correct one and they said it was, i asked if that modem will work and they said it would cos on their website it said it should work.

I wouldnt have a problem using my neighbours wifi but its slow and im stuck in a 8mb broadband contract so i would rather use that.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good modem? am i right in thinking a ethernet would be best? i dont care about it being wireless cos my mac is where the phone line is so im not bothered. I just want a modem that works no problem? just plug and go- pc world have loads of modems for £80+ and they say on the box they work with osx10 but thats what the one i have now says.....

Your problems is not with OS X, what you've bought is just an ethernet router with ADSL WAN gateway, OS X doesn't care. It's just IP packets.

Unless that particular ADSL router doesn't actually function as an ADSL router then replacing it with another is not going to fix anything.

The router should have a stats page which might give an indication as to what is going on.

Should show the state of the connection, so if it's seeing an ADSL signal it'll show you the sync speed. If you're not getting that, then check your wiring.

Next check the log, you'll be looking for CHAP authentication errors. If you see these, then your login is not working correctly.
