My cars just failed it's MOT on having little or no parking brake on the drivers side.
A few weeks ago when it was in for a (poor) body repair they also done the passenger side hand brake cable. The guy said when he test drover the car that the rear brake seemed to have been sticking on and then it was ok.
On looking tonight the hand brake hadn't snapped and cable seemed tight, but on closer inspection the circlip on top of the level which the hand brake cable connects to had come off and the lever slipped down meaning it wasn't working the caliper. I've since tried to put it back together but the lever actually slides through a copper shim (not sure if that's the correct term) at the top and bottom of the caliper where it moves and I couldn't get the top one back in.
I'm now wondering what my best option is - take it apart and replace the shims (if parts are available), but then is the circlip likely to come off again? Or could that have been because the guy tightened the handbrake up too tightly?
Are they cheap enough to buy new or would second hand be my best option?
