Rear brakes binding, help please

  Mustang, S13, AX GT
The rear brakes on my 172 are binding quite badly, the offside can be pushed round by hand but literally as soon as I stop pushing the wheel stops moving however the nearside is holding and cant be pushed by hand, I can force it with my foot but the disc starts to move :S

I have looked through guides and theres nothing there, I want to take the rear brake assembly apart, replace the rear discs and pads and clean up the calipers, I was told that the front bind was due to some rust build up on the carriers? So I assume it will be the same on the back so would a quick job with some sandpaper and then some grease or something sort it out (assuming it is the carriers).

If its not worn disks and pads or the carriers then what else could it be?

eh? what part of caliper would cause it? Can I fix it or does it need replacing? etc etc

I could be wrong Kneel but most of the rear calipers suffer from a split gaiter around the piston causing it to get stuck. I have mine to do actually.

You could try checking to see if the seal/gaiter around the piston is actually split?? If that is the case then you can either try and fix it (think there's a place where you can get spares) or if its totally fubard then a repalcement caliper can be had.

I have a faulty OS rear one too...been like it ages  ALthough I do have a spare to fit next week from memory I bought it off the braker guy on here for about a tenner??

If the gaiter is split I'll replace it, my friend had a split one on her MR2 and we had to 'fix' it using a hammer and metal bar atleast once a month. I cba with that again.

just use a screwdriver to lever the handbrake arms towards the back of the car. if they move, there'll be a problem with the cables or the mech

It is a b**ch to move them. Struggled like **** doing mine with a heavy duty screw driver. Lots of swearing that day. Thought I was going to push the car off the stands lol

Boot has probably split on the piston. You'll need to get a new one from somewhere. I got mine from bigred.co.uk

Best to remove the boot from the piston, wind the piston out, then spray the hell out of the piston with WD40 or something similar clean the piston and repeat then wind the piston in and out until its free moving again.
