replacing rear cylinders on a 1.4rt

just spoke 2 my mechanic and he says i need them replaced coz they r leaking (wud explain continuous topping up and spongyness!). he says he will supply and fit for 90 quid ( he has just supplied and fitted 2 top mounts for my front suspension and he has charged me 100 quid for that) is 90 quid a good price, also wud it b hard for me 2 do it myself? and how much wud the 2 cylinders costs fmr partco or gsf? cheers

£100 for top mounts is a bit steap IMO parts are only £20 then say an hour and a halfs labour.
They look like ther £16.50 from GSF. Fitting not to difficult just remove the wheel, drum and move the pads out the way. Then you you need to put a clamp on the brake pipe then undo the brake line from the drum at the back undo the two bolts holding the cylinder on at the back of the drum near where the brake line you just undid is. Just need to be careful as brake fluid is nastly stuff plus you have to bleed the brakes setup so say £10 of fluid (might as well use decient stuff and £15 for a one person easy bleed kit (if you don't have one) so total of say £55 if you need to buy the brake bleeding kit.

the drums will require cleaning as will the back plates, also the shoes may need replaced.

the unions are normally buggered so hes probably factoring in he will have to cut the metal pipe back a bit and fit new unions.

its easy to say well hes only changing wheel cylinders, parts come to roughly 25 quid btu often its not just a nice 10 minute job due to these factors!
