Rear disc dust covers

My dust covers are missing off my rear discs, are they really necessary to prevent water ingress? The fronts never have them anyway.

But I do use centre caps that secure in here and I sprayed some acf50 in there

Saved me £8 then, thanks. I'll just pack extra grease over the hub nut for extra protection. @Louis
