Rear Wheel Bearing



My rear passenger side wheel bearing has gone. Had both rear wheels off and its quite obvious which one it is.

I fancy getting my hands dirty on Friday and doing it myself. Got my Haynes manual and done a search on here for how people have got on.

I read too much and confuzzled myself.

Once I've got the hub off do the rear bearings need pressing back into the hub? (there are varying accounts on CS - it will be Good Friday so garages wont be open).

Some say that its possible to get the old bearing out without a press just using a 30mm socket and hammer. I was thinking a G-clamp and some wood.

Does the new bearing go in straight away or does it need the same treatment as outing the old one but the other way?

Any help appreciated me old mukkas.

done one the other day heat it up and knock it out with a 41 mm socket hammer

or failing that tighting it in a vise with a 41mm socket pushing againts it

does take a little while to get them out....

you will need to be carfull putting the new bearing in as you dont want to smash it

I spent a couple of hours earlier today sorting this. I got the parts from AJ Spares in Chatham. Nice blokes there I would recommend them.

1 x Rear wheel bearing kit £23.66

I needed some tools :D

1 x 30mm socket £6
1 x circlip pliers £10
1 x small pot of grease £2.80

All in for £50 inc VAT.

Method:

(I don't take any responsibility if you use this method and fun your car up!)

1. Jack car up and put on stands and take off wheel.
2. Make sure car is in reverse and is secure and the handbrake is off!
3. Loosen off the 30mm bolt and take off the hub. Remove the circlip from inside the hub. I'm glad I spent the £10 on a good pair of pliers because you'll need them to get it out as its very tight.

** be careful of the brake dust, it is dangerous of to breathe in! **

4. Turn the hub so the inside is facing up.
5. Place the 30mm socket in the middle (its obvious what way the bearing comes out) and proceed to batter it out. It takes along time to tap it out so be patient or take it to the garage and get them to use a bearing press.

Step 5 will take freekin ages. It took me a good hour, the Haynes Manual will lead you to believe it will just press out. I needed to get it sorted as we are taking the clio up to Buckingham and I didn't want to loose any face with my father inlaw as he said it couldn't be done without a press! (I did pappa myself at this point esp when the old bearing fell to bits in my hand).

6. Finally with the old shell out clean up the hub and re grease the bearing seat.
7. Place the new bearing in and tap it back in the in to place :D

A tip for putting the bearing back in as it will slot in nicely half way and the rest will need tapping in. I thought bugger it was going to be just as difficult to get back in. ** Use the old bearing case to tap it back in as it will be a perfect fit and shouldn't damage your new bearing! As it was nicely greased it only took 5 mins of gentle tapping for it to get back in.

8. Put the hub back on the same way it came off. Remember to use a new locking nut. Plus, make sure its nice and tight!

9. Put the centre cap back on and finally put the wheel back on.

I took the clio on a 40 mile test drive up the M20 and it was so nice to be able to hear the radio again as it was so loud. I was worried more than 1 had gone as its on its original set and its done 86k miles! Fingers crossed it was only the rear offside.

I would do it again as I saved a fooking fortune but trust me it is bugger to get the old bearing out! Once you've done that its a 10 min job.

(I don't take any responsibility if you use this method and fun your car up! Its a simple enough job, but you really will need to give the old bearing a proper battering)

i did all mine a while back no way on earth was i getting them out with a socket and hammer of any kind!
Even the press was working hard!

You can always heat the hub up and put the bearing in the freezer then it should go in easyer ull have to be quick tho.But it works.
