Remap advise please!!

  Racing Blue 182
Hi all,

So to cut a long story short, I put a Yozza and decat on a few weeks back, now my EML light has popped up with catalytic converter faults. I didn't think that would put the EML on but the diagnostics guy thinks that the new exhaust is creating a different back pressure that the ECU is not expecting and putting the light on. The diagnostics guy advised a remap.

Now, will I have to go to somewhere like KTec and get it done properly, or will an RSTuner remap suffice? Moneys a bit tight at the minute so I'd prefer the RSTuner as its cheaper but I doubt it will sort the problem.

And I really don't wanna get rid of the Yozza!!!

Thanks all!

I put a Miltek on mine myself last year, no EML light came up or anything.

The Decat could throw some errors up as presumably theres an overead on the second lamda?

If its running rough, I'd highly doubt its because of the decat or exhaust, otherwise there would ve a lot of posts about similar issues as you've had!

You want tonget your car to one of the specialists off here to sort it out to be honest, they should be able to.tell you whats wrong.

I think the lights on due to the decat, its probably the 2nd lambda sensor telling you its running rich as its picking up fuel after the cat, coz there isnt 1

  Racing Blue 182
So is it possible then that if I put the cat back on, and sleeve it etc, (exhaust has been horribly modified by last owner) then I might not even have to remap? You think that it might sort the problem?

Thanks for the replys guys.

  Clio 182
Luke mine did the same with the decat. As soon as i refitted the cat and drove it for a few miles the EML light disappeared.

  Racing Blue 182
So I have been a bit stupid. From looking at the log book (should have done that first tbh) it isn't the EML although it looks like one. It is the exhaust gas management light so I need to sort this thing out. I am thinking of instead of remapping, sleeping the exhaust with a cat, anyone know a good place to take it to get this done? Thanks for the replys.

Depends if you like the sound of the decatted yoza? Just buy a new centre section ;)
I do but the home made decat is s**t and makes it sound s**t, and a centre section is a lot and I have heard the olive fitting is a bit of a pain so I think I'm gonna get it sleeved for a better join, hopefully I will still get to raspiness but without the boomy, blowy s**t haha.

  DON'T SEND ME PM'S!!
removing the sensor and keeping it plugged in, but out of the exhaust has the same effect of turning the light off. Just need a bung (old sensor will do nicely)

  monaco 172
why do you care? its only a little light its causing no harm, its just telling you that your car is damaging the environment because you havent got a cat in there.

if its that much of a pain then put the cat back on.

my car is decat, the light came straight on, however ever since i got my rs tuner remap i havent seen the light since..

  clio sport ph 1
My light never went on ?? Decatted but I swapped for an early engine loome. It has got a fault code but no lights ;). But the shiftlight is now on permantly . My ecu isn't set up for the light.
But all balls out cars have a christmas tree on the dash.:rasp:

Its annoying haha! I can't put the cat back on coz the person I bought it off cut the olive join thing off and stuck a flange on it so it would fit his 'home made' decat!

I'm tempted to try an RSTuner, but I thought that I would have to get a proper custom remap in order to cater for the exhaust?

Or just buy a cheapy code reader for £13 off eBay and turn the light off yourself ?

And then it will come back on as the differential that the ECU expects to see between the two sensors doesnt exist.

If you want the light off, put the 2nd sensor in fresh air, then the ECU thinks the cat is working , ie just cable tie it up under the car and leave it electrically connected but not physically in the exhaust.

A remap will NOT sort it, whoever the "diagnostic guy" you spoke to is, he hasnt a clue TBH from the sounds of it.

Haha, I thought that too! Anyway, the jist we have come up with is that it is running lean and horrible as the ECU doesn't know what's going on, with the decat etc. on. So the old exhaust and cat is going back on tomorrow.

The question is if I buy a cat back system that isn't modified to only fit a decat and fit it with a cat, will it still affect the car? Like will it run lean etc still even though it has a cat? Apologies if I make no sense I don't know much, I'm only going on what I have been told.

Do you have any symptoms other than the light to make you think it's running lean? 2nd lambda has never had any effect I can measure to fuelling tbh and just an exhaust and decat shouldn't make a huge difference (will make some, not lots)

It's not running the same as it was with the old exhaust. Apologies it's hard for me to explain when I don't know anything lol. It seems very lumpy (like when cold). Whenever I take my foot off the throttle it jerks a lot, same with when I put my foot on the clutch. When on idle, it shakes a lot and when accelerating it seems to drop power for like a split second and pick up again. It has no way near as much power as it did before and it feels really restricted! Sorry again for the rubbish description, thanks for all your inputs.

Not with the off the shelf map but you can flash open cal files with them too I think. Mine is a master so that's open regardless

On the newer ones you can only flash a map specifically coded to your vci apparently so you can't even swap maps anymore. Sensible mod for him to have done tbh!

What is this so called flashing a map chip? Is this something I could do to sort the problem with the new exhaust? I don't wanna get rid of it unless if I can help it!

Sorry for the jargon.

Map just tells the Ecu how much fuel and ignition etc to run the engine with.

The rs tuner is a gadget that allows you to write (flash) a new map onto it and the usual one to use on your car would typically work well with a decat and free flowing exhaust.

It costs 50 quid from the company that make the rs tuner for a license for your car and 30 quid or so for the map.

Im pretty confident that would work well with what you now have.

Im no rocket scientist and might be wrong but to me its nothing to do with any map. The op is describing a miss firing engine ??? Rough idle, drop in power for a split second and then pick up again, shaking etc? I think he's getting confused because he has fitted a de cat and it coincides with the mis fire starting or s the only thing he has changed so is blaming that.

I would like to know as well how your mechanic can tell its running lean with a fault code reader?

Oh OK! So what map is it that you think will do it? Just a 98 RON map or something? I didn't think that an rs tuner would do it, I thought I'd need to get a custom remap job!

I thought it was misfiring too! That's why I got my spark plugs and HT Leads changed (as they were fucked) so I thought that it might be to do with the exhaust. Do you think it is misfiring and I need a new coilpack or something? Bloody hell! One problem after another haha!

He didn't think it was running lean from a fault code reader, this is what my dad and a few other people (that like to think they know about cars ) think because of the new exhaust, and as I know nothing I thought that could be it, could that explain these issues too?

Thanks guys.

Oh, and this is an example of a car running lean from a diagnostic machine, provided by another member.

Your dad is correct that at full throttle with a free flowing exhaust that a car with a MAP based fueling algorithm will lean out slightly, the the effect is going to be very small, it wont cause misfires.

Can you just do a post with ALL the symptoms your car has, so we can start from scratch with trying to help you solve the problem from the actual behaviour of the car rather than from trying to make assumptions based on other people's guesses?
So no mention of opinions or guesses, just tell us when it does or doesnt splutter or misfire, where power is or isnt missing etc, just the raw data.

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
I'd somehow missed that he had already replied with exactly what I was asking for. Reading fail for me, apologies OP!

Coilpack or injector seems very likely.

Or just a plug lead loose which seems to happen quite often on these engines!

Right... As said before, please excuse my lack of knowledge!
- It idles very rough, shakes about all over the place when its not moving. It seems to shake every now and again, as in it will be fine for a few seconds (although still not sounding great) and then it'll start shaking around a bit.
- When driving, it is very jumpy, as in, take your foot of the acceleration slightly, and it jerks backwards and then it seems to slow down as normal (sorry hard to explain), put your foot down again and it jerks forwards and then accelerates the same. Its a very rough ride, but yet again, not all the time. From a bit of research, I think it compares to when people experience a rough ride when its really cold (when it has a lumpy idle too) which I believe it just what these cars are like until they warm up.
- It loses power now and again, e.g. did it around 3-4 times in a 5 minute journey (can't really remember when but maybe up hills the most??). You put your foot down and it accelerates, and all of a sudden it will drop power (you feel it pull back a bit) and then it kicks in again. This is only for a fraction of a second.

Sorry for the bad descriptions

Looks like I have done it again anyway haha! Oh joy, I have heard that the coilpack and injectors are expensive! :(
I'm guessing they will cost a lot in labour to fit too!! I have changed the plugs and leads coz they were rusted out, maybe a new coilpack will sort it completely!

So nothing to do with my exhaust then!? (Apart from the annoying exhaust like that keeps flashing at me!)

Is it worth me getting it plugged in to find out whether it is the coilpack or injectors, rather than getting both?

Thanks for your help Chip and Dan!

  Racing Blue 182
all that and you could've just said misfire ;)
Haha! Sorry Fred, I don't know anything, and tbh I don't know what a misfire feels like when your driving (never experienced it before)

But I guess now I do haha!
