Removal of battery - affects?

  Corsa Van. Meh.
Seeing as I haven't used my cup since I bought it a month ago I figured removing the battery would be a good idea as I don't have a trickle charger.

Any affects of doing this?

its suprisng how long a battery will last if your going to be using it soon i wouldnt worry,if its going to be laid up for a while then get a trickle charger

its only worth removing the battery if its going to sit for a long time,

My old 182 battery went flat after only 6 odd weeks of no use, lived on a trickle charger after that.

The thing is though they are really tetchy about doing things if they think it might go wrong. They don't know about any cars and only go from experience. The experience in your case was that they did one a few days ago and buggered it up so they assume the same might happen again.

Mine died after about 6 months of no real use, although we did start it regularly and drive it up and down the road. When it went i was told i'd damaged the immobiliser and electrics by trying to jump start... bought a new Bosch battery and bob was my uncle, all sorted. My recommendation would be to disconnect if you are going to have any length of time sitting idle, for the sake of a couple of minutes undoing the connections its worth it to keep your battery that much more in shape...

apparently it takes up to 20 minutes driving to recharge the power used to start the car once, or so i was told

That sounds like a bit of fact bending to me. It might use that much power, but whats to say how much capacity the battery has? You could start the car 1,000 times and it might not empty the battery.

Oh and I'm not having a go at you! My post seems a bit negative but its not meant that way.
