removing aircon without a cup alternator

Hey.
I worked out how to remove the aircon from my 172, easily without needing the whole cup alternator, brackets, pas hose etc.
I used an idler pully from an aussie car, and had to machine up some sleeves so it would fit, but it seems to work.
unfortunately i didn't get a dyno run beforehand, to see about hp gains, but it's definitely better.
I'm racing in production cars here in aus, so any gain is a good gain.
If a few people are interested I can machine up a few more sets of the adaptor collars, and sell them with the right pulleys, bolts etc.
sure beats hanging out for a crashed cup to pilfer expensive parts from.

Ive had my ph1 converted to the cup setup and had the aircon ripped out
Bought all the parts tho.
Doing this wont gain any HP but it will free up the engine because the crank has less accessories to run.
Wouldn't mind seeing what you've done tho

Why not get a CUP in the first place.

Because the ph1 is the best 172...
Ph1's lighter than the ph2, it has an alloy bonnet lighter than carbon, propper throttle with a cable and not the flaffy electric one, larger exhaust ports, propper airbox, no traction control, no esp, no acostic valves, no cruise control, no fancy crap its raw and only has bare essentials.
Strip the aircon out and ditch more weight, free up the engine with the cup setup, interiors gash so may as well rip that out too and yabba dabba doo! cup killer...ownzered! :rasp:

i dont get this?

a cup dont have traction control, esp, cruise control, fancy crap etc.

fair enough if he had of said why not just got a normal 172? but he didnt, he said cup.... so you cant really say what you have as a cup dosent have all those bits your trying to say makes yours unique and raw.

Drive a ph1... then drive the others... it just "feels" better ;)
More... GRRRRR

Theres a few chaps on here have gone from the ph2 to a ph1 and say its more fun

the aircon doesn't weigh 20 kg's. i was hoping it would be a larger weight reduction, but it's actually 9.5kg all up (compressor, condensor, plus all underbonnet pipes.) There would be more weight under the dash if you stripped out everything, but it is not a lot because most of it is plastic and it is a large pain in the a*se.
but it is a fair chunk of weight hanging way in front of the front axle.
removing it helps the car change direction.
the good news is that 9.5kgs is only 1kg shy of being 1% of the cars weight. mine now weighs 995kg. so the combination of losing 1% weight and freeing up about 2% power is worth it for those of us chasing track times.
It will give you an at the wheels Hp gain, because 'at the wheels' is engine power less power lost in the drivetrain and accessories.
as for the 'why not buy a cup in the first place' - 172 cups were never sold in aus, and the 182 cups weigh a fair bit more.

i mite just leave my belt loose ;).. if i cant get brackets
don't forget the same belt drives your (very important) water pump, plus power steering, plus alternator.
I reckon I could supply the kits for about 50 quid. + 10 for postage.
It would take me a few days to do up a run of the aluminium bushes on a lathe.

20kgs? its not

I have owned the ph1, then to a cup (present) driving wise, no difference imo, looks wise, obvious, the mk1 looks like s**t from both ends and in cabin. My (dead) Williams is better looking and drives/looks better (twice) need a haed for it, pm me before friday, ta
