Removing Centre Console/MFD

I need to get a cable from the top of the clock/MFD on my Mk2 172 to behind the headunit. Does the MFD come out from the dash and if so, how?

The centre console appears to be connected to the whole dash as pulling it pulls the whole top of the dash with it!!

To get a cable to the back of the display, you've got to take the whole upper section of the dash off.
