Removing PAS Pump for electric item

  182 Trophy
Mine is on the way out - whining like mad!

This gave me the idea of perhaps opting for a slightly more reliable electric pump, but I'm curious if anyone has ever....

A. Removed the PAS pump while retaining aircon.
B. Replaced it was an electric pump.

If the answer is yes, what did you do about the belt setup?

I could be tempted to ditch the aircon, although would rather avoid it if I'm honest.

Thoughts?

The other option is of course to get rid of the PAS completely and dump a 1.2 rack in there. But how does the gearing of the racks compare? Is the 1.2 one much slower?

1.2/DCI rack is nearly the same gearing as it is EPAS. I am running this setup on my 172 (PAS and AC removed) and it's perfect.

Have you got any more information?

What kind of belt setup did you run? When you say it is EPAS, are you talking about an electric pump or a motor assisted system like the Vauxhalls have?

The whole rack?

That seems like a lot of effort. It was my understanding that people were using the standard rack but with the saxo pump.

I'm concerned about the belt setup though.

The DCI rack is powered by a electric motor on the column. I used some R5 brackets and a ?5pk825 belt?. Have a search on the forum, part numbers are listed somewhere. Pretty common setup when running a F4R in a mk1.

Edit: The Saxo setup is just the pump, the rack itself stays standard.

I might of been that then I can't remember lol.

Another thing to consider is do what crispy did an take all the pipes, bottle etc. Off and just leave the pump. It might not whine if not in use. The only thing is your have heavy steering lol.

Running a hydraulic PAS rack without fluid is dodgy imo. Do it properly with an electric pump/manual rack or leave it alone.

I have absolutely no interest in running my current rack (or pump for that matter) unpressurised.

I'm leaning toward the manual rack option, if I'm honest. My rack is also making funny knocking noises, so I'd be killing two birds with one stone.

I've been searching around for the info without much luck though. I'm guessing I'll need a cup alternator, too?

All the info is in Jays old burpspeed thread and new thread for their race car.If you fit the saxo pump it will need to find a home somewhere as burpspeeds is located where the abs used to be.

i converted my 1.2 phase 2 into a f4r phase 2 and ran the pas pump with no fluid ...... it ran dry and the pulley sheered off ( oops ) lesson learnt!
