removing wheel Hub

The wheel bearing in one of my wheels hubs has gone so instead of going to the trouble of buying new bearing etc i am going to change the hub instead.

Has any body ever removed the wheel hub from their car ?

How much work is involved ??

Ive already had a look at my hub and it seems that a lot of pressure is going to be needed to remove the driveshaft nut,

Is it possible to remove the driveshaft nut with the wheel still intact ?

Did you need to use the locking mechanism recomended in the Haynes Manual ??

Cheers, Dave

i would take the wheel off first it would make it a lot easier!

best bet it to jus buy a hub form somewhere then go to a back alley garage who will fit it for piss all!

BTW lovin the exhaust!!!!!

I think i will end up taking it to a garage but i still may give it a go, i planned to take the wheel off, its just that the nut is on so tight that the whole hub moves when i try to loosen it,

Have you got any flames yet ??

Are you using a de-Cat with it ?

nah no de-cat i dearnt it would be crazy its loud and beefy already if i de-cated it it would sound like a nova! it pops and burbbles which is wot i wanted and fcuk me does it turn heads!

well wot i would do would be to keep the wheel on then loosen the hub nut jus enough then take the wheel off and then the hub

easy peasy.

Leave the wheel on if you can, with the car on the ground, take the centre cap off, get a (erm forgot the size) large ass socket on a 1/2" breaker bar and itll undo easy. once youve loosened it, jack the car up, set it on stands, wheel off.

Take off the caliper and hang hang it safely with no tension on teh brake pipe. put the jackunder the rod end and put pressure on it so that the spindle wont spin, and undo the nut. Unto the 2 strut to hub bolts and watch the shcoker doesnt prang into the gaiter of the outer CV. Undo the bottom swivel hub inch bolt, knock it out, and whack the hub off the drive shaft splies (got locking fluid on it so can be hard ish), then whack the hub off the bottom ball joint.

take the hub and a new bearing to a garage (pref a ren specialist) who will press in the new bearing, then put it back on.

hope i didnt write that for nothing...now go do it! lol

Cheers for that, Im a bit more confident to give it a go now,

Will the 1/2" breaker bar be strong enough ?

I had a little go with one yesterday and it felt as if the 1/2" breaker bar was going to give way before the driveshaft nut ?

hub nut is 22mm (or at least I am pretty sure it is). Watch before ball joint locking bolt (where it attaches to hub) doesnt shear on you as thats happened to me twice

shocker to hub bolts-18m

track rod end-16m

caliper-18m

balljoint-16m(sometimes 17m)

driveshaft nut 30m

sorry, meant a 3/4 breaker......but a 1/2" will do it aswell if you have that socket size for it

the bars wont break.....that easily.
