Renault: Can they do this?

  renault clio
Booked my car in to my local dealer's about 4 months ago as my car is still under warranty. This was because everytime I went to change in to second gear it would prove to be very difficult and eventually it did not even go in!!

Anyway they had my car for 4 days and phoned me to say the gear box had been fixed. When I asked what the problem was they said that there was swarf in the gearbox oil. Anyway because the problem was solved I did not think much of it. I phoned them to check how they fixed the fault and all they done was take the swarf out and change the oil.

1 month later 70% of the time I changed to 2nd from 3rd or 1st Id get the grinding noise again!!

This pissed me off so I took it to Renault again!!

After my car had been there 4 days I received a call to say that the gear bos doe's have a fault and doe's grind but only when you do a racing change!!!! and if I changed gear slowly it was ok and therefore was not covered!!!!

I was pissed off with this as it did not make any sence and phoned Renault direct to make a complaint. After a long conversation It eventually got booked into another dealers 40 miles from the previous one. If they look and can not find a fault I have to pay £90 odd pounds as it's a second opinion.

I took the car in this morning and the women on the front office asked what time I could collect the car tonght as if they wernt even going to change the gearbox.

I have the impression that I will get a call this afternoon asking me to collect my car and pay £90 odd pound's as nothing's been detected.

I know there's a fault as all my mates can detect it and even my mum!!

Can they do this?

Surley not as they admitted their was a fault but only when you change quick!! (what bollox)
And.... why was their swarf in the oil anyway????

need some advice.

Has anybody been treated like this?

Yes, had a similar experience with renault autoworld. Apparantly it's normal for an exhaust to clatter while the car is idleing. Phoned renault UK dozens of times but no luck. They will do anything to get out of doing warrenty work and the quality of work carried out at dealers I've visited has been shocking. Feeling your pain on this one. Nothing worse than having a really obvious problem with the car but being fobbed off.

What Clio is it?

if its a 1*2 i'd argue that people don’t buy RS clios to drive slowly and if you cant do a "racing shift" then the car is "not fit for purposes" and threaten them with trades descriptions act. --Type stuff

Most people get treated like this at renault mate but seiously thats a shitter because they only wont replace it because it costs so much.

Oh and be warned, if one dealer "fixes" a problem and does a bodge job, the warrenty no longer covers having that problem fixed. You either have to take it back to the place that mucked it up (hmmm yes please) or pay another dealer to do it.

I had a squiling noise from the gearbox on my 182 at 25,000 miles new box fitted under warranty no problems.
As for the pick it up later if they do find a fault, they will expect you to re book it in beceause there stupid and dont allow time for things like this.
They had my car for 2 weeks in the end.

This sounds like a classic "hold off the boat" situation , you're being f**ked . Reading this pisses me off, it reeks of dishonesty.

I would ,as said before, stay there until they fix your problem. Are'nt Reno doing a "keep customers happy" campaign or something of the sort ?
You can also threaten to post up your experience on a site like this where loads of people will read it

Good luck, do'nt let them put you off !!!!

Especially the bit where those gays say "it's fine when you do'nt shift in a sporty way " is too much. You've got a bloody cup-packed sportscar !!??

tell them that in order to achieve the 0-60 time they quote, you will need to perform a fast shift.

If you cannot fast shift... then the car isn't capable of doing what it was sold to do... that specific o-60 time.

sounds about right to me :)

no need to say more, this is exactly what you can slap in their face !

Its hard to threaten people with something you have already done.

And the gearbox isnt good at shifting fast, the clio box has never been

c'mon, when the box is'nt letting him shift from second to third properly then there is clearly a problem. I know the boxes are known to be not all that but i drive mine in a "sporty" way and there's no problems..

I think the point is; if you force the change and damage the syncro you are going to have future problems changing gear.

Anyway, what more do you want. He thought there was a problem, he took it to a garage which fixed the symptoms.

The symptoms reoccured, the garage looked at it and said it doesnt do it under normal conditions.

He is taking it somewhere for a second opinon.

I dont see what it wrong with that.

  RS RIP
Nothings wrong with that, but i remember/feel his trouble... they're trying to get out of the guarantee by saying it's normal.
I'm thinking he would'nt bother to even go if he himself it was normal ... I understand totally, in his desperate situation, that he's going for a second opinion. I would'nt do it at a Reno dealer though..

When shifting the way you say, so quick that the synchros are'nt able to cope, then it would'nt be a grinding noise but something sounding totally different?

Again, this is a correct way of making your point

My 172 does not do that and its 4 years old......It certainly is not normal.

Ask Renault if you can have a specialist look at the problem, identify it, and if he does (and its a warranty issue) have them pay his bill.....Not sure if it has any chance of working but its worth a try.

Incedentally, Roger Denton is in the area (Rushden) 01933 411555 I think

UPDATE.

Dropped my car off at Cambden Renault at 7.30 Friday morning. The car was in to have the gearbox looked at for the 3rd time!!

At 4.00pm I got a call to tell me my car was ready to collect. I asked the guy what they had done to fix the problem and he said there was a slight gearbox oil leak which they had sorted.

I told them that I did not think that was the problem and I was just being fobbed off as usual. The guy then put me on hold for 20 min and the phone then cut off.

About 40 min later I got a call again from the guy at Renault. He told me that they would need the car for a few more day's as I needed a new clutch!! (my clutch is fine!!)

I told the guy if they were to fit a new clutch then fine as the car is under warranty. He told me that I would need to pay for the clutch!!!

Amazing!!!

I told them not to touch my clutch and just look at the gearbox without loosing my temper. I then got told they would call me back.

No call.......

I rand up again and asked to speak to someone who could tell me what was going on. I then had a women come on the phone who did not have a clue what she was on about and had a really bad attitude. She told me that I would have to give them my consent to take the gearbox apart to have a look. If they determined that it was not a warranty problem then I would have to foot a bill of £900.00 + Vat.

I told her that I could not afford this and I was totally disguisted at the way they treated me. She said if I did not like it then it was my problem and not there's!!

I left work early and went to collect my car as I did not want to leave it with them any longer. When I walked in the office the whole place went silent!! I asked for my key's and I was made to sign all the paper work. I was then told I had to pay a bill of £95.00 to cover costs!!!!!

I have rang Renault today as my warranty ran out yesterday and looged a complaint and told them I want the problem sorted or I will take this matter further and not give up untill I am satisfied.

Where do I stand though? Iv'e had nothing but trips to different dealers, time of work and still have a shagged gear box!!!!!

Im so pissed at the min and am yet again waiting for Renault to call me back!!!

Phone Watchdog at the BBC. Speak to CAD (citizens advice bureau) and go from there.

Do you have a Solicitor? Speak to one/yours about legal advice after you've spoken to the CAD.

You may have to go to court, you also may have to pay court charges if You lose the case, however I'm sure if you won the case you could force Renault into paying the fees.

The dealership doens't want to go strip the box down/replace it for free as they might not get paid though you have to see the point they could have helped more though.

Thats not the customers problem though is it Edde :( at the end of the day once the box is stipped down and the fault found the dealers have a system that they tap into to find out if the fault is covered under warranty or not.

Ring RUK back again if I were you and see what they can do to help you but stay calm and polite as getting arsey gets you no where fast.

I'd be more concerned that they have taken the car out and been thrashing the tits out of it. I'd speak to citizens advice personally or get some legal advice, as I had a similar problem with Ford when my callipers were both fucked on a brand new Zetec-S. Killed the pads and discs and also the window mechanism was faulty and the window would only sometimes open or close... in the end it took legal action for them to fix the problem under warrenty and this was after MANY conversations to Ford HQ as well.
