Renault Clio 172 starting problem

  Clio 172 Sport
Hi guys, new to this forum so please bear with me if i am stating an obvious problem that has been covered many times before:)

I have a Clio sport 172 2000 model (old shape) about a year ago the thing just wouldn't start - it turned over but nothing until the battery went dead. The AA came and it started straight away - then a year later the same thing has started happening. In between times i did notice it was running high on the revs when warm and a touch on the throttle would stop this so i have recently (two days ago) replaced the idle control valve which has fixed that problem - i was told that the starting and the revs were connected and so hoped the situation would have resolved itself.

Anyway despite the car driving better than ever and it just being serviced and had lots of money spent on it ive just driven a short trip, come back to the car after a couple of hours and guess what? It wont start!!

Can anyone please diagnose this problem for me??

Your a life saver if you can!

I got back in a minute ago after leaving it all afternoon and it started first time. Does this sound like a TDC sensor?

If yes is it easy/cheap to replace?

Thanks again.

if its never been changed from new it will be the TDC sensor, this problem has been addressed and the new parts you buy from Renault are an improvement over the OE fitted one

  Volvo S60 T5
GSF car parts do them but they dont come with the loom, so you need to ensure the plug that goes into the sensor is in good condition.
Costs around £20
If its not TDC sensor then check the engine fuse box wiring as that is prone to corrosion.

i'd say tdc sensor for the starting issue, and sticking throttle cable for the high revs (v. common on the ph1's)

Ok so to sum up i order the TDC sensor from Renault and it is just a matter of fitting it - no recoding or anything like that needed? Where is it located?

And its just a matter of taking the old one old and putting a new one in? Nothing else involved?

  ph1 172...a red one
er doesn't it require soldering of the new loom plug onto the existing loom, as a ph1 will have the old style connector??
