Renault Specialist in NE england / need quiet exhaust

  Nissan 350Z
I've just picked up a Clio 172. The exhaust that has been fitted looks like something that someone salvaged from a banger race. It also sounds absolutely horrific - loud, boomy and chavvy.

I'm after a nice quiet exhaust - 172s don't sound all that great anyway, so I don't really want it to sound any louder than it would as stock.

I've rang a Renault garage who have quoted over £350 just for parts, then on top of that, 2.5 hours labour, which I'm guessing will be at least £150.

I've googled around and came up with "Alpine Automotive" in Blaydon, who, on the face of it, look a decent company, but I can't find any testimonials and I'm not taken in by professional looking websites; as someone who used to design web sites for people, it's not difficult to make a cowboy outfit appear professional!!!

So I was wondering if anyone else had any suggestions as I know there are a fair few Renault Sport owners in the NE.

AAS in newcastle are fantastic dare i say one of the best custom exhaust manufacturers in the country. If you want a custom quiet system look no further mate ;)

Yeah I know of them. Just down the road from me actually. I've had work from them before, no complaints, but there was a long waiting list, and I don't know how much longer I can stand that horrendous exhaust that's on it now!

Jimbo beat me to it with AAS.

If you know them and are happy with their work its worth calling them to tell them your situation.

In fairness, the Renault system shouldnt be THAT expensive now.
Trust me it is the quietest system you'll have being OEM, however they are not mega-durable unfortunately.

I had a 3yr old 172, it'd had a manifold, two centre sections by the time I got it.
Guess what dropped off not long after.

Backbox.
Ripped the whole thing out cat-back and put a stainless system on - wanted it to be quiet as poss and in the main it was good and sounded nice, but it unfortunately just boomed at 50mph.
Other than that it was great.

The booming is something I definitely DONT want. My 182 exhaust when I had that didn't exactly show signs of longevity. So I guess a stainless exhaust designed for quietness is the way forward, but most of the time in my experience they are almost always louder even when you don't want them to be.

Cheers g@z. If you have seen the state of whats on there then I'd be surprised if anyone bought what is on it now... though I guess I may be surprised, since someone bought it in the first place!

I think you're right though, its probably going to have to be standard.

Good find g@z, theyre not bad prices.:D

pbirkett, I tried to have my system replicated in stainless, i.e 2" bore throughout. Only bit they didnt replicate was the slim resonator box (silencer) at the back of the centre section, as they didnt have a silencer narrow enough.

I understand some s/s exhaust manufacturers DO systems with the additional silencer, so that may be what you should look for in the interest of longevity.
Its a while since i sold my 172, so I'll apologise in advance that I cant remember.

I have same thing coming up with the wifes 182 Cup, backbox shall soon need replacing - I'm remaining standard.
