RenaultSport Clio 182 EU import?

  Clio Sport 182
Hi everyone, I have had my Clio sport 182 for a couple of years now and went to try and trade it in at a ford dealer. They told me that it was an import so it was worth alot less than I thought. When I looked at the V5 it said that the reg date was in 2004 and the uk reg date was 2005 so for a year it was somewhere else.

The guy I bought it off didnt mention it was an import and I had no idea anyway so I paid the amount he asked for it which was a standard price for that car at the time.

Is the ford garage correct that it's not worth the same as a UK car?

Thanks....I'm really pi**sed off now. Why do I always get ripped off? It was my mate that sold me the car as well I'm going to go round and have a right go at him. Arrgghhhhhhhh

I spoke to the guy i bought it off and he reckons its not an import event though the garage said it was? It does say on the V5 that it was registered in the UK a year after it was built. How can I find out if it was an import and if so where it was imported from?

Someone more knowledgeable will come along shortly I'm sure but I'd try speaking to Renault. I thought it was pretty common for them to sit around for a long time before being registered hence the handful of '06 plate 182s that are about.

Yes it has locking wheel nuts and the log book is in english I cant see any foriegn writing or anything. There is an etching on the window...Renault, saint gobain something or other and some numbers. If it isnt an import then why was it registered in the UK a year after it was made? Seems strange.

If it isn't an import there's many reasons why it could be sat about for ages. If it was a display model / cancelled order / dealer went bust / blew up while being driven off the boat on the rev limiter ;) it could be sat around for a long time before being registered.

Imports were sat for some time in Ireland iirc and sold to car supermarkets like Motorpoint. Because of this they were never fitted with certain items that RUK did at the import centre.
These were
Alarm Fitted
Locking wheelnuts
Etched glass with numberplate.
I think other than that the spec was identical (there may be others but the majoricity certainly was)
I had my 172 in this manner which was why it was a 04 172 altho it had been manufactured fairly late in the 172 cycle.
Easy way to find out is ask a Main dealer as all the imported cars wont be on their list where the normal ones are.

Thanks everyone, I have checked the car and it has locking wheel nuts, alarm and etched glass, I will check with Renault though. I dont think it is an import I think the bloke at the ford garage thought it was because he couldnt find some details on it when he put it into experian..i think it was the engine number or something so he assumed it was an import. He did want me to buy a fiesta zetec s 1.6 diesel though...same year as mine and more mileage but he wanted me to pay 3k! Maybe he thought it was worth a go with me being a girl but i did tell him he was off his head so that didnt help. Anyway i'm only selling it because i'm skint....i'm sure i will cry when i have to part with her. I can't even think about it i'm welling up just thinking about it :(

Not this old Chestnut:S. What Wolf says is correct . The only difference in a UK car and the so called Imports are they didn't have an alarm fitted , big deal ,i had a much better Toad alarm fitted with a lifetime warranty, the cobra alarms only had an 18 month warranty and often went wrong or had problems with false alarms , they had no wheel nuts , i bought some genuine Renaault wheel nuts off ebay for £8.00 :rasp: and no etched glass which iirc Renault stopped anyway on the latter 182's . Other than that , they are identical cars made in the same factory in Dieppe and and are worth no less now on the 2nd hand market than the UK models .

One significant difference is the price paid compared to UK cars . I'm on my 2nd Import from new . And i paid £1500 less for my 172 compared to dealership prices and roughly £2000 less for my 182 . When i came to sell my 172 , i priced it the same as similar aged 172's with similar mileage , condition etc and i got the price people were asking for UK models . So i was happy bunny :) Just one more point . My insurance company did know it was an import just from my VIN number , she told me almost straight away . I don't know how she knew , someone who has more knowledge of VIN numbers might be able to help there .

Oh , and i got the full 3 year AA breakdown cover and 3 years warranty as per UK models . Although Motorpoint did say on my 182 i got No breakdown cover and only 2 years warranty . All i had to do was ring RUK and register my car with them . I think i was told about this off another CS member many moons ago .

If your ring Renault UK customer services with your details they'll tell you whether it's an import or not . Tel 08000 723372

Thanks for the info....to be honest personally I dont care if its an import or not particularly it just really annoyed me that the ford dealer said it was and tried to offer me so little for it... £1,750 to be precise and then sell me a fiesta the same year, more miles for 6k? I mean i know they have to make profit but that is ridiculous. I have just emailed customer service for renault UK but i will let you know what they said, it would be interesting to know if it is an import although I am thinking it isn't now. My insurance company didnt say anything about it being an import either. Anyway thanks for everyones input...much appreciated :)

Damn, it is an import...this is what I got back from them. May see what they have to offer and if not will just keep it for a few more years.

Dear Miss Hallsworth,
The Ford dealership are correct, your car is an import. Have you tried
our dealership in Macclesfield who are both Renault and Ford, I'm sure that
they will be able to better any deal offered by a competitor.

Please give them a call on 01625 507100

You said you weren't bothered it was an import lol . Tell the dealer to jog on if they think they can offer you peanuts for yours . Now your armed with some info on imports ask them exactly the reason why they say imports are worth less . They want your money mate , they won't want to see that fiesta sitting on their forecourt in a month or two months time . All the time it's sitting there it's dead money and it's depreciating in value . You tell them what deal you want .

Just had a quick look on Autotrader . 54 plates are going for anywhere up to £4000 or thereabouts . So depending on your mileage , condition etc thats what i'd be looking for personally . Having said that , i was offered £4000 trade in on my 172 , i sold it private for £5200 . Your always gonna get less if you trade it in . Can you not sell it private ?

I know I shouldnt be bothered but if it affects the price then obviously I am. I know that the UK and imported ones were most likely made in the same place anyway. I expect dealerships just dont want people importing cars its got to affect their prices so they probably just claim they are worth less so it discourages people from importing, the ford bloke said something about not being able to warrant parts. Anyway theres nowt I can do about it now. I'm more annoyed that my mate who sold it to me didnt tell me it was an import but me being dumb and gullable just believe people all the time.

The ford blokes just trying it on . They'll say anything to knock you down on the price it's actually worth . Like i said before . Can you not sell it privately ? Did your mate actually know it was an import ?

Have a butchers at autotrader to give you a rough idea what it's worth . But its worth hell of alot more than he's offering . At least another £1500 on top in my opinion .

I have been asking £3500 for it privately but no interest yet...its in good condition and has 60000 miles and its in the arctic blue colour.
I will see what the dealer in macc say but if i manage to sell it privately then i will most likely go to the car auctions and pick something up there its just a bit inconvenient because i need a car to get to work. could buy an old banger for a couple of weeks thoug i suppose. I love the car and the way it drives and looks I just dont feel its very reliable and the parts are expensive. in the past year I've had a new gearbox, part of the exhaust and clutch. i need to cut down my outgoings and its either my car or my pets!

  DON'T SEND ME PM'S!!
makes bugger all difference. haklf the cars that come in to me have the alarm switch missing off the slam panel so are most likely imports. 99% of buyers have no idea of this

All imported from France anyway.

THIS !

they are not worth any less what a load of bollox ! only difference is alarm ,which most imports have cat 1 upgrade fitted because you cant insure em without , ALL Renaultsports are imported flol !

  Clio Sport 182
I have never said it is an import to my insurance so do I need to tell them?
Also how do i know what sort of alarm its got?

  Trophy #267
Standard alarms (I think cobra) have led by the gearstick with microwave transmitters and receivers on the a pillars near the sunvisors. Imports dont have this standard so may have none / different.

why when you ask a man a question they reply but don't actually answer the question?

ok well i've got it booked in the garage on friday cos i've snapped the handbrake so will ask them if they know what alarm system it has...

i've got a Chinese mate who could sort you out with some good recipes for the cat and dog

Thanks but i've got four rabbits, 3 cats, a guinea pig and a gerbil! Not sure what I could make out of that lot but reckon it would keep me going for a while.
