Renaultsport Clio 197 F1 Team Edition

You will end up having a moment of weakness! ;)

I would have one alongside mine, but not as a replacement for.

I'm managing to control my moments of weakness these days. The last two got me a 182 and a Trophy.

Bottom line is :-

Nearly everyone on here, car mags and reviews all say 3 things on the 197

1 - Too heavy
2 - Not enough power for weight
3 - Slower in a straight line than previous RS's

This F1 resolves none of the above 3 whatsoever

We've got the Corsa VXR and now Ford releasing a 170bhp Fiesta ST 1.6 turbo

In the mid range the 197 just aint gonna cut it, no matter how you dress things up

They need to shoot the dude in Renault who thinks adding cheesy F1 branding stickers to a car is a good idea. Besides looking bad, the stickers just slow you down. Can only be a bad thing!!

  Turbos.
I just want them to throw the Megane turbo engine in the 197. Even if it takes them 2 years, i'd probably wait.

The Megane has been around for ages now, when will it be replaced? I personally think they should restrict the Megane to a 5-door, then the Clio won't be directly competing.

I don't see many RS Clios around, but i see far less Megane RSs. From a business point of view, i think Renault would make more money if they had a world beating Clio.

Corsa looks a bit like Clio 197. I think they have been doing their homework. Still, looks too much like a Vauxhall for me - they have just gone too far and there will not be any performace edge over Clio. Okay, a bit of torque.

Don't do it Lee ! I regretted selling my Trophy.

I switched over to Honda for 3 months, but switched back again, this time opting for the slightly more practical FF-182.

I could have purchased a 197, but it just doesn't do it for me.

I can't see any reason to doubt that Renault won't get the 197 absolutely brilliantly right, even if it takes a little while.

The Trophy received pretty much identical abuse on here prior to its release, and now look at it. The 197 F1 may not be the next Williams/Trophy, but you can bet that Renault will be working damn hard to make sure that sooner or later the 197 will have a variant up there with the best of them.

I'm sure they will. They have proved this over and over again.

But I no longer like the shape. It looks too similar to every other hatchback. I now prefer the look of many other hatchbacks. But I know the others will never compete with the 197 handling.

lol at everyone saying they like this version, it has red painted brakes, anthricite standard alloys, and i.d paint. Its no different to a normal 197

Press release mentions revised spring and damper rates...

that will make no difference imo, considering how well the 197 chassis has been received.....

spot on that man

F*ck me, those stickers are poor.

So basically a previously unavailable colout for mk III, Recaros and iffy graphics? No weight saving, no suspension tweaks. LOL

looks good but i am entrigued by the fiesta turbo tbh. that sounds cool.

the 197 is f**king great as standard spec. wouldn't mind the recaros though tbh. the anthracite, stickers and stiff springs i can do with out (i might be getting too old...)

shame renault are trying to make it too much of a chav chariot with these lairy paint jobs. Must be trying to appeal to the 172 mk2 owners ;)

do the stickers make it go faster , if they don`t make a faster one soon looks like i`m going for a r32 .

Have to agree...it's seems to have drifted into competition with the Megane which, at the moment I would choose over the 197.

Megane 225 engine in the Clio would be a belter though:)

^^ Agreed. Do Renault actually listen to what their buyers actually want? A naturally Aspirated 2.0L engine aint going to cut in todays markets (unless your Honda and can extract 240 bhp from it - S2000) not when BMW/Mini/Vauxhall/Peugeot have joined forces to build this 1.6 turbo jobby. Why didn't Renault go down this route? Maybe 200-210 bhp and a shed more torque!

Renault are obsessed with "limited edition" variants. Just build a bloody quick Clio and get us interested once again! 16k or whatever for this F1 edition, have a word.

I do like the look of it, and those seats look very nice but, as mentioned above, no weight saving, no increase in bhp/torque, so no real point.

Tys.

the turbo costs more to put into the 197 hence the price would megane 225/230 and the handling on the 225/230 is already better than any current clioRS as is the accelaration, power is there for the tweaking also.

Easily pleased eh!

:dead:
i always wanted a yellow 197 with anthracite wheels and recaros, my dreams have been answered, i can forgo a slightly slower car for one that looks amazing!

The 197 has always looked amazing anyway. I have had similar thoughts as the above, but I know after a week I'll be gutted that it doesn't have enough grunt for 95% of the roads I use, and it's a s**t motorway car. Liquid yellow and darker wheels or otherwise.

After reading the whole thread, my opinions are;

Renault are definitely milking the F1 thing to the extreme now. The 197 is already a fantastically capable and desperately good looking (in the flesh) machine. For me, it is also definitely too slow to be considered as an upgrade to my 182, which is almost certainly going to be replaced by an R26 but that's going off topic. Releasing a limited edition BEFORE the standard car has evolved is pretty amazingly poor, even against their own track record.

Renaultsport have a cult following (in the UK at least) and it would be nice if they listened and at least attempted to give us some of the things we want. WHITE FFS! The body shells all come from the same BIW and all ship to paint and go through the same paint shop. We know you can paint it white. Liquid yellow is great, but why the hell cant you ship some RS designated bodies in white? It's not rocket science :)

Also, I'd feel a bit of a tool trying to rip up the M1 in a car stickered up as an F1 UberHatch and getting spanked by a Mini Cooper S driven my some homo ;) Make it fast, don't waste my time trying to make it LOOK fast. I know it's a capable car on a track, but 99.99999999999% of us will use it on a road.

I funking love the Munson.

One thing we do know is that there will be a Megane 250 R27 (using the LSD tested in the R26) about a week before the new Megane is on sale. I mean come on, 5bhp (allegedly) increase on a forced induction motor that has an LSD to cope with FAR more? I'm going off topic again but...

I am a few clicks away from ordering an R26 but can I let them dry-fist me? The 197 R27 is even more of a piss take. Limited Edition? The car is less than 12 months old, all anyone has asked for is more power, and that's the only thing it doesn't get in this UberEdition? f***s that all about?

The combined effect of all the tweaks should be a Clio with a more hardcore temperament than the 'ordinary' 197, but no more straight line speed. For that, we'll have to wait until later in the car's life, say company insiders, when the drivetrain from the larger Megane R26, complete with turbocharger and limited slip differential, could find its way into the Clio's engine compartment; if it does, it could result in the fastest and most compelling Renault hot hatch since the Renault 5 Turbo.

Perxactly my thoughts. Sheep in wolf's clothing...

Speaking of Liverpool.

Did you see Dirk on BB last night with his Liverpool (well Daniel) jibe.

Can't quite remember what it was:rolleyes: but LMFAO anyway :D :D

once it gets to or over 171 bhp/ton i'll be happy

Never going to happen. Ever. At around 1250kg it's going to need c. 215bhp to make 171/ton. The race car only has 205bhp...If they can shed 50kg and give it identical power to the race car, then its' just about possible I guess.

So how was your test drive? :nono:

Why am I going to waste my time test driving it...I'm not stupid enough to buy a brand new car from Renault.

Have you test driven the new 197 F1 edition?

No, but I'm not the one saying it's not an improvement over the standard car. It's entirely likely that it will handle amazingly, since the standard car is already superb :approve: I do agree that the F1 livery is a marketing ploy though, when all most of us really want is for it to have enough power to hold a candle to the car that Renault undoubtedly hopes people like us might upgrade from.

  Turbos.
I agree with Tyson about all of this Limited Edition b****cks, even for a Renault enthusiast i get confused by all of these different models coming out, so what does your average punter think?

I just hope Renault make a good start to the season otherwise when the Team F1 arrives it could look a bit lame...

As brilliant as the 197 obviously is this version is not different enough is it?

The Trophy seemed to be a big step up handling wise due to those dampers but what new tricks has this special edition 197 got up it's sleeve to convince us lot?
