Replaced gearbox oil, very faint whine..

Posting this up because its on the back of my mind. I replace the gearbox oil purely because I fancied it, I think the correct grade is 75w80? I put a thread up and seemed 75w90 was fine to use. (is 90 thicker?)

So I replaced the oil and now I'm not sure weather I'm just listening out for things I normally wouldn't but there's definitely a faint whine coming when the wheels are rolling faster than I'm accelerating, does that make sense? i.e. when im backing off the accelerator and letting gravity pull the car down the hill.

Also if I take it out of gear it does the same thing but I only really hear the noise when cold slowing down to a stop, also does it when the clutch is depressed so would that mean its more likely to be another noise i.e. the cat join that whistles sometimes? or would the clutch being down not matter as the gears are still spinning?

Getting into all gears seems ok I'm just wondering weather I should replace the oil with something else now.

Its probably a faint sound and you're looking problems.

Nope its ktec new gen induction kit, I think it could be the cat to manifold join but It sounds more mechanical than just a whistle, maybe I'll get a video if its loud enough.

I've driven the car a bit more and im fairly sure its the gearbox giving a very faint whine, it didnt do this before I changed the oil I'm sure. Is 75w90 thinner or thicker than 80?

Im also unsure if having taken the OEM airbox out to fit the ktec induction has left a big wind hole and that could be the noise.

I was told carlube was fine when I made a thread but now I'm thinking of getting some else or something else? like elf correct grade?

I find 75w90 doesnt really work nicely until you've really warmed the box up.
I'd stick to the tranself 75w80 and make sure the box is filled to the correct level.

Yeah the noise goes away when its warm it seems, so Tranself is the stuff to use?

Yeah thats what worries me no one else seems to have had a problem, the noise is faint but noticeable, Ive tried a few different things to try and rule out if its the gearbox or wind noise.

The removal of the airbox for the induction does leave quite a big gap and anything could be hitting wind and making funny noises. Might have to install the airbox for a day and see if its just wind noise.

Just for arguments sake is there any tests you can do? i.e. if your moving in gear and then take it out of gear would the noise carry on?

Also I guess it could be a wheel bearing, and the fact my passengers arch liner is broken.

I went for a long drive tonight, I just want to rule out any potential gearbox problems so I can stop worrying, the noise is quite annoying tbh its audiable with low music, I think its an air noise, but I cant tell until I put the old airbox in.

I think where the airbox was it covered a lot of open metal parts etc, and now its gone air is possibly making a noise hitting something. But at the same time a few of the noises do sound a bit like gearbox noise although I think its a mixture of air noise and also the fact the airbox covered over the gearbox so now I have both the odd gear noise and wind noise, and as you can see there's quite a bit of space now for air to hit.

I'll have to put the air box in and go for a drive to see if its any different, has anyone else fitted the ktec induction kit and heard any wind noise?

On any car for example that had transmission whine, would the noise normally fade if the clutch was pressed down? the box having no drive? or no? (haven't a clue with clutches / gearboxes)

When on long straight and going down hill fast if i press the clutch down the noise continues, I suppose it could be a wheel bearing?

You can use a bit of common sense really. A gearbox whine will be predictable, will change in relation to revs, higher revs higher pitched. Induction whislte just pulse the throttle a few times to change the noise massivley. It shouldnt take any sort of rocket science to distinguish the two.

Play with engine speeds and loads to determine which it's coming from.

If its faint I wouldn't even go looking for problems. Worst ish case If it's something like a worn entry bearing or similar you're better off just waiting till it starts becoming more apparent. My box has been in for 2 years now and has always had a faint whine but given no grief what so ever. Always used the correct trans elf

And I agree with all of you, I've been for a drive, without the airbox on top of the gearbox I can definitely hear more gear change noise, but I think its nothing to worry about now I've done a few tests changing gear and going down hill like i said above it and its a wind noise. The lower arch liner passenger side is missing, so first of all I'm going to replace that. So that should make a decent difference in the massive amount of air that rushes up there. There will still be plenty of air for the induction just not so much is whining.
