Replacing the alternator

Car  2002 Clio Dynamique DCi80
My alternator packed up (or so i think), when the car is on - power reading stays on 12V, turn the car off and its the same.. guess that and the battery light (constantly on) would mean that i need a new alternator.

If i buy the alternator is it a dificult job to change it myself?

I've been quoted 'around £300 mate' which includes alternator, im well skint right now and if its not a dificult job i could really do without spening £300.

My car is 2002 1.5 DCi 80 (with aircon, think i need a diff alternator for that).

Any guru/mechanic advice would really be appreciated.

Nope, i haven't but surely if the alternator was working the power reading would go up when the engine is on.

Or am i wrong???

Definatly sounds like a charging problem. First things first, I would check and clean up the contacts on the battery and alternator. If it turns out to be the alternator, there pretty easy to fit on the k9k. Remove the belt, the 2 long 13mm bolts and the connections. Then it should lever out. But you need a special renault tool to tension the auxillary belt, and they have to go murder tight!

You could with a lever bar, but it will most definatly not be tight enough. Another thing is that you might have a spring loaded tensioner which some had.
Hope this helps.
