Restoring iphone

when i just plugged my iphone into itunes it told me it cnt read the contents of my phone and i need to restore. The phone is working fine still but i cnt do anything on itunes apart from restore. Does itunes restore the phone anAND THEN ask to back it up or should it ask to back it up as soon as u click on restore ?

I dont want to lose all my stuff so would rather just not restore it if it was going to delete everything.

iirc once you have restored it, itunes will give you the option of backing it up from your last sync/backup. so anything you have done since then will be lost if you restore.
