Rev Limiter

Hi

Ive only had my clio 1.4rt (92K - Phase I) a couple of weeks and was wondering if they have a rev limiter? Is there any way of finding out without going for a blast?

Ive pushed nearly 50 out of 2nd and it didnt kick in then?

Thanks

Dazz

Its up to you if how you drive your car but I want mine to last.
Well stop driving it on the grass then! ;)

Fairly easy, just let your engine get to normal operating temperature and then pull over and idle the car. Make sure its in neutral - and then bury your accelerator pedal to the floor. If its an RT, it will have a rev counter and you will see it swing right up over 6000rpm. At some point it will "bounce" off the limiter (6500rpm???).

Theres absolutely no harm in revving an engine up to the limiter in normal driving. In fact, if you drive a 16v its pretty much essential (although peak power is about 500rpm before the limiter). Its usually the ancillary parts that get a beating when you drive a car hard. If you drove everywhere in 1st gear at 7000rpm, my guess is that the engine mounts, gbox etc would die before the engine blew up (if it was warmed up properly).

Which is why you gain no benefit on a standard 16v by hanging on to the final 500rpm before the limit kicks in.

  Was a Clio 1.8 16v

Humm, disagree; doesnt cause u any harm IME. Will soon know at York though.

PS: 1/4 mile gear changes; do i full throttle it when changing or as normal? Cheers.

my 1.4 rt has a limiter, comes in at about 6300, which is all good fun, sounds good too! yeh its good to give ur engine a good thrashing evry so often! or so i keep telling myself!!

I disagree thrashing any engine does it no good what so ever. Think about rally or F1 cars (I know this is an extreme) their engines need rebuilding after every race, ok you dont drive your cars as hard as that but thrashing it every so often will do similar damage in the end just over a longer time period.

When my engine is coldish (i.e. not fully up to temp), mine bounces at 5750 - 1.2 DIET engine.. do it all the time, it rocks.. heh. I think it changes to above 6k when warm tho!

I made a little movie of the 5750 bounce in 2nd.. heh.. Im such a child.

Daz.

Daz - I think youll be doing an engine conversion sooner than you think if you keep on bouncing off the limiter when the engine is cold!!

Do any of you actually know anything about engines? Doesnt seem that way.

Anyway if its injected then it has a limiter. It will be about 6500rpm. On the 19s with injection the limiter is at 7krpm.

On the carbed versions theres no limiter. I rev mine to over 8 grand quite often. Its even survived a miss shift ibnto 2nd at over a ton which took the revs up to about 11k.

Done 180k and its not in any danger of blowing up.

Tell you what when I meet you I will roll out a red carpet and give you a big medal as well shall I !!!!!!!!!! Cor I wish I was as clever as you!!!!!!!!!

My guessing is, a rev limiter is over protective.. they aint gunna put a limiter at a point where 1rpm more is gunna blow it up, are they?

I think Chris H, if its the same person, used to work for Renault or something? Not 100% sure.. tuning and stuff.. I could be wrong!

The rev limiter is just that. To prevent any old heap of an engine exploding.

No dont work for renault, but depending on where you have seen/heard of me I am possibly the same person.

Hehe, I dont post much on there, not being a member and all.. but you can see I make up for it on here!
