revs on a 172

  R35 GTR

Hi, got my 172, nearly two years old, so well worn in.

I have been told by many normal car drivers that I shouldnt be doing more that 3000 revs or I will be damaging the engine, or racing it as they say.lol. My mom says I shouldnt be driving it like I do, "Its not a race car".:)

Just wondering what happens at the different stages on the rev counter, I have heard most people going on about red lining it, I have never been past 4500 yet, but can definitely feel a boost around 4000.

Also what sort of revs are safe in certain gears? Can you goto 7000 in all gears?

Youve never been past 4500!!! You might aswell get out and walk then....

Its got a rev limiter for a reason. Just drive it how you want and ignore the old people..

You gotta get to 5000 revs before it works properly! It is a sports car, rag it, itll love it!

these cars are designed to rev and to be driven hard. i hit my rev limitor at least once a day, and mines done 83k.

just rev it and enjoy .

I think the car will have a gear change indicator, it lights green when the gear needs changing. best thing you can do is go and try it out.

theres still plenty of power after 4500

goodluck

I dont feel the kick till just after 4500rpm heh.. deffinatly floor it ! (but wait till the engine temp is up)

Ok, cool. I thought it was fast, but didnt realise I wasnt pushing it hard enough. What gears best for going up the motorway sliproad?

WOW If you have never been over 4500 then you prob aint felt the main kick anyway. My wife red lined mine strait after she picked it up for me at the garrage!
Have fun dude! :D

That was sooo fun. Couldnt get the light to come on, as I dont like going over 70 especially as I have had my license for only 11 months.

PMSL @ 4500 Revs! Didnt realise the redline was at 4k!!!!

Push it all the way, every single day!!! Thats what its designed for! And if youre not hitting the limiter at least now and then send it back, you dont deserve it ;)

an F4R doesnt come alive until south of 5k anyways.

take the tartan blanket, cushions and Werthers Originals off the parcel shelf first though.

I am gonna try a week of foot to the floor, then a week taking it easy. Will see what kind of mileage I am getting.

Once the oil is hot (15 mins) then you can bounce it to 7250 all day long. Its designed to be revved and thrashed to sh*t. If it wasnt, it wouldnt have a 3 year warranty and a 7250 limiter. Ignore all the diesel driving faggots...REV it *HARD*

Is it ok to rev high in first, dont really want to f**k it up, but it is still under warranty. Definitely having more fun now since the first post. I stick it in second and floor it, I may only go to forty, but people stare in amazement at how nippy and loud it is.

LOSER ;)

Stop being a fanny.... Just drop gears. Overtaking in second is always a good one!

LOL Dave

My valver doesnt normally get taken over 4,000 rpm on a typical journey to be honest.

Occasionally gets a workout once fully warm, but I value my money too much! lol

Go steady, but enjoy!

Cheers Tom, glad to see not everyone is a nutter on the roads. I dont know which way I am going at the moment,(sane/insane) just trying to get used to the power, and not get done for speeding.

But I do like the power, I want more, more, more!

Yeah, it is a hot hatch and has a very revvy engine like the valver/williams, but i think there is something nice about pottering about in mine.

I like to work it a little bit sometimes, but normally just enjoy "cruising" for want of a better word! lol

Every once in a while is best for me, I appreciate it loads that way.

The only icreased risk in flooring it in first is that the lower gear will place increased load on the drive train and tyres. Drive it like you stole it, you wont break it by driving it hard...its far more likely that the toys will fall apart long before the car ever does.

Hmmm 40 in 2nd is nothing at all. as long as your enjoying it thats the main thing, but I think you would get a shcok if you let some other guys drive it who know what there doing.

I too rarely take it over 5000rpm on an average day, i just love to play around with the power, knowing and enjoying the fact, theres always plenty more where that came from...

but today, when i got the car back from the shop after two days, i just let it go wild, i slammed it down in every gear and generally drove it like i just stole the crown jewels, lol:D

thats what this car is all about...if you service it properly, dont abuse it when the engine is cold, give it quality oil and gasoline and try to avoid a few road lumps now and then, the car will soak up just about anythig you throw at it without a problem.

However, should anything fall off despite all that, what the h*ll...its just a car anyway and its supposed to be driven;)

  R35 GTR

lol. I had fun today, should really let the car warm up, but what the hell, I love the noise you get when doing 70 in 2nd. And my neighbours all give disapproving looks.

Dont worry about damagin it I get my dci over 4.5k ever day and its been fine.

Id personally recomend changing the oil more often though say ever 6 months/6k.
