Rimworld

Yep, perhaps one of the most inappropriate game titles that I can think of in recent years. Took a punt on it, even with it retaining its fairly high price tag and not really having a clue as to what to expect.

It’s an open world sandbox game that has a shedload of user content and plenty of vanilla game additions to begin with. Your premise is three crash-landed survivors that simply have to survive. You can give them traits and skills to begin with, but I think it’s more appealing to have three randomers created for you.

Once started, you have to collect items, build structures, defend them, research and as said, survive. I’ve barely scratched an hour into it, having completed the tutorial and started off on my own. Already I’ve a medical emergency, another member on the verge of mental collapse and a lone wanderer entering my camp and being ‘savaged’ by the pet Yorkshire terrier.

It’s sat on Steam with an Overwhelmingly Positive rating, including one reviewer having over 4,800 hours logged into the game. I’m beginning to see why - especially when you have the control over the games’ AI choice that oversees all the events going on. One is completely laid back, allowing you to build with the minimal of fuss or threat. A halfway house choice that seems to be a mixture of growth and challenges. Finally a complete despot that will chuck allsorts of curve balls into your best laid plans.

It looks very basic for a modern game but has a load of depth. I’m glad I bought it - it might end up being a decent time soak.

WTF - this game is brutal.

Left to go and make a brew - came back and some bloke called Macer turned up.

Didn't 'interact' well with my trio from the looks of it.

I only have 26 hours in it, but I reckon those were mostly with a single world

I think I stopped playing when my entire camp was massacred :(

First time I played rimworld was in 2016, it was so basic back then!

I play a game every now and then but to be honest I find the new updates adding a bit too many 'options', drifting from the core gameplay.

Still a great time sink.

Thats a man in black. Your pawns were killed by some event and the game gives you this man to continue your colony.

If you think this is tough you need to get modding the game. I have well over 300 mods to change the gameplay as well as the two expansion packs.
Combat Extended puts real world physics on weapons -makes combat more deadly.
Hospitality adds the ability to get guests and run a hotel.
Theres so many. I've spend hours just trying mods. Theres mods to mod mods even
If you think 'man in black' is sexist. There is a mod for person in black so you get females too lol

If you fall down this rabbit hole you need to download Rimpy to manage your mods without loading the game.

The depth of this game is really quite impressive. We had a 'pet' donkey that was old - but he was feeling confused. Turns out that he had dementia and the game allowed me to simply release him into the wild rather than just kill him.

I then had some raider attack me with a club and my trio just manned the barricades and fatally shot him. Picked him up and tried to save him, but he died anyway. Got one of my team to dig a grave outside and bury him as it stated that he would start to decompose within three days. They are complaining of the quality of the home already - the last thing I need is a stinking corpse too. :p

Get a research bench made up as fast as possible so you can advance your technology level a bit.
First basic things are to get beds, food and recreation and you should be able to keep them sane. I create a few small fields of rice and vegetables to get things going. Then some basic power. Theres wind, water, steam and other more complex systems.
You are going to want clothing too before winter. You can strip enemies before they die so clothing is not tainted with blood. To capture people arm your pawns with clubs and blunt weapons to incapacitate without too many internal injuries.

Are you on Steam?
Vanilla Extended Mod Series is a good start to adding more content.

Thanks for the tips - I've got one of my minions researching electricity at the minute as I assumed that that would be a universal requirement?

The food aspect is one I need to address quickly. The rations that were on the ground are running low and I've planted crops - but done bugger all with them! :p

Good shout about not using the likes of guns and knifes to ruin the likelihood that I can capture the randomers.

Yep - I'm on Steam (Unzen) - I'll have a look for that mod, cheers!

Theres a work tab on the bottom menu. If you want to get your crops planted quickly select 'grow crops' as a work option for all pawns (if you have not already!)

Still seem to be struggling with the most basic of functions at times. My trio are perpetually hungry - despite having a chef amongst them and me selecting to make 'bills' of food. I'm clicking for the spuds and strawberries to be harvested and the corn is only on about 30% grown for now.

Also had two people who arrived and who soon died, but despite me regularly telling the trio to strip the dead people - they well and truly leave them alone. Is it because I told them to consume the last raider who attacked and was killed? :p

I usually just bury the dead, don't bother with their clothes as they'll be tainted and your pawns won't like them. Just take their weapons.

Have you got specific zones set up for food/clothes/item storage, preferably indoors?

It's been a while but you'll need a stove, harvested potatoes and then set the bills for meals on the stove. You can play around with settings but main options will be what food to use and how many to make.

My main goal after setting up basic sleeping accommodation, stove and bit of food supply is electricity to get airconditioning units. With them you'll be able to cool a room and use that as a fridge/freezer to keep your harvested crops and meals from spoiling.

Also make sure to plant in rich soil if you have it nearby (darker soil tiles, hoover over tiles to see their stats (or is that a mod?)). And if you think you've planted enough food plant more, I always seem to run low the first winter.

Monday morning.

Started work.

In a Teams call.

...but thinking of how to get my three lackys to farm resources better and stop behaving like a bunch of pussies, simply because they resorted to cannibalism.

Set priorities to manual?
That helps you manage the importance of each job. Then dont create too many jobs they all need to work through.

If you have lots of dead bodies - research nutrient paste. No-one can tell what it is once its been liquidised so no food debuff.
You can also hunt animals on the map to give a food sourse but you need to build a butcher table (outside as its dirty)

Only stumbled across the whole cleanliness aspect yesterday, which saw two of the team spring-clean the shithole into a moderately habitable hovel. One member flatly refused to clean-up - in fact if she wasn't so highly skilled as a chef, I'd probably turf her out. Diva bint - she refuses to do anything!

Rescued an injured member from another tribe whose stats already have 6 with animals and 8 on crafting. Looks like the crew have given him enough medical attention for now - I hope he stays...

I'm not sure how you convert captured pawns. I have the ideology expansion so I have to imprison, then convert to my ideology; either as a slave or work harder and get them as a colonist. Apparently you can have slave revolts.
I'm holding out playing until a new mod comes out called Vanilla Expanded Ancients as it brings another faction into the game.

Are the two official DLCs worth it? I've added them to my wishlist so that I don't forget about them. I'd probably pick the Ideology one more than the Royalty one.

Difficult. I bought the Royalty DLC as soon as I bought the game so I've never played without it. Gives some good quests, a tough Empire faction which you can call for help and you can get psy powers for your pawns.
Ideology is probably more immersive in that you have a belief system that all your pawns will adhere to and you have to do more to keep them happy.
Based on how many hours I've sunk into the game both are good value though if i had to choose maybe Ideology would get the vote.

Well, that went south very quickly. Formed my first caravan to go and rescue someone and one of the trio didn't even make it to the edge of the map before contracting hypothermia.

Wuss.

"Needs a doctor"

We haven't got one.
