Are you in the big smoke now or still in Essex?
If you're in Essex tbh I'm not sure they're worth it any more as it's all yellow fixed cameras and mobile laser traps that give you no chance of escape.
If you're in london then a GPS based one will be best as they have SPECS, truvelo, digital cameras etc that aren't radar based now - and a radar detector will drive you nuts lol. (I know - I've used one in london LoL)

My step dad has a road angel an its mint i want one.

If he wants full on protection then he needs:
a) a radar detector hardwired in discreetly so you can't see it obviously (as they will make him take it out, drive over it, then escort him to the cashpoint to pay a €500+ fine if they see one in france and other countries)

b) a GPS-based detector, which will pick up all the fixed sites (but, again, frenchies etc will screw him if they find it, so a satnav with the camera option could be a plan)

c) a laser diffuser discreetly hardwired in (to give him a few seconds to slow down if he's lasered off a bridge etc)

Note that the laser one is dodgy ground as Perverting the Course of Justice is what he might risk if caught using it over here.
