Rocket gasket - one for the pro's (although all advice appreciated)

Rocker* gasket - one for the pro's (although all advice appreciated)

Well in the last 8 weeks my car has lost around 5L of oil (not a happy bunny) took it to my mechanic he said there's lots of oil down the back of the engine from the top he said looks like a rocker gasket to him

How do I replace a rocker gasket on a 1.1 8v (D7F engine)

My dad said its normally just 4 bolts and the top comes off but I've had a look there a black pipe like thin that splits into 4 other pipes that sit across the top of the engine it looks very confusing and fiddly

Any advice very much appreciated a step by step and I will love you :)

Thank you

Nick

Rocket gasket ftw !

I'm not sure if these use a gasket or if they are sealed with sealant, but being a diet engine I imagine it would be easy to find out after you remove all the plastics ;)

Could perhaps arm yourself with Halfords finest literature and go to work with the spanners ?

My god FML and my Phone! Rocker! hahaha

and they are a Cork Gasket from what I am aware of mate I don't trust myself mechanically to pull bits off an engine hell I won't even change a belt! Im that scared o_O

Car's are like lego, but more female in nature. Take a few photo's before you start, can't go wrong ;)

Looking at this, it looks like the inlet manifold will need to come off and the coil pack, gives you a chance to clean the intake up :D

The bolt torque's for when it goes back together:

Rocker shaft bolts 23nm / 17Ibf ft

Look's much of the same mate with the above, just has a different manifold :)

I'd start with the easy bits, filter, intake bend, HT leads, coil pack, throttle body, manifold cover, manifold itself then you can remove the manifold and probably just push the rest to the side. I don't think you will need to remove the spark plugs, although if it hasn't been serviced recently it may be worth a look.

If you take pics and leave the bolt's where they came from, you should be fine :) Reading about these engines don't seem to hold the cams in with the cover so just whip the bolts out and it should pop right off.

That's the intake manifold, I can't quite make out from the picture if the fuel rail is attached to it (The sport's is split into 2 and it connect's to the bottom half)

If it is be very cautious with it lol

Your best bet is to get your hands on a workshop manual or a haynes, it will give you the specifics when you get to the point thinking "Why wont this b**ch come off" :D

I can get more pictures at dinner if it helps :) I know behind the each of the 4 pipe things there's bolts and they are an arsehole to get into! I tried getting a socket in and it wouldn't have non of it lol

Got to love videos ;)

This will help you with some of the bit's - also gives some insight into what's behind some of the plastics, the inlet manifold you can make out now.

^^^ this

Plus every problem thread you start you mention "your mechanic" now i don't mean to be rude but is he blind or just thick as s**t??

Find a local garage where the mental IQ is more than 2 and the mechanics know what they are doing!!:D

And 5 litres in 8 weeks is alot of oil to lose from a rocker cover! sure its that??

Cheers for that mate, Thats one tiny bit lol just got to get the rest of aswell :p Whats in an inlet manifold?

I know I know that's why I come here to see if his advice is plausible ;) hehe Im not sure about the oil there no patches left where I park at home, work or the misses so I my mechanic thought it's burning the oil but theres no smoke coming out the back end? there is a lot of oil down the back of the engine though from the top :(

The amount lost does seem excessive, the inlet manifold provides channels into each cylinder for the fuel and air mix, one side will have the cylinder head and one side will have the throttle body that controls the availability of air, the more air available the more fuel mixed (Basically supplying more air supply via the throttle body with the accelerator pedal)

The manifold has to be sealed between the head and the throttle body or you get air leaks, air that leaks in causes the car to detect more air and inserts more fuel causing it to rev without any throttle pedal.

So if I took that inlet manifold off fuel would come out?

The fuel line is sealed ;) Just be careful not to hit it with a spanner as they are quite fragile.

You can see the one in the F4R above, it's the black strip below the metal inlet on the front

lol believe it or not that's what my PH1 looks like at the moment with a phantom wiring issue !

If I think back (WAAAAAY back) when I had my 1.2 8v - I think the fuel line sits just above the inlet manifold, so they may come apart.

You not got any mates who works for a garage ? it's not one of the most difficult procedures in the world (On this engine anyway) but it's 100% worth doing right ;)
