roofrack marks

My roofrack seems to flat the paint and makes the finnish dull.
Is there anyway of stopping it? I did start putting tape on the roof before fitting it but this then leaves the glue behind after I remove it.
Anybody got any others ideas?

3m Blue painters masking tape, sticks to paint but is low tack and does'nt leave marks behind.
