So i've never had one of these.

What is it? How does it work? If I wanted to put a 'pops and bangs' map on a mates car, but fit the 98 ron map onto my car, is that do-able?

How useful are they as a fault finding tool? I appreciate they're not as good as clip, but are they as good as a snap on diagnostic or more comparable to the likes of a £15 generic code reader?

What's all this business about getting it unlocked too? What's that mean?

I have one. If you come on the 22nd you can watch me use it / map mine. I'll text you aswell...

PS. They are excellent for fault finding. Bring up the code and finds nearly all faults (you will need th extra modules - ABS etc for some fault finding). Its not just a fault finder though, you can wipe the faults aswell. I.e. fix it, then wipe the code = no annoying lights etc.

Hi they lock to each car it maps

So you get it unlocked you map your car it will need to be unlocked to map your mates car and so on unlock and map cost around £90

Diagnostic wise ive never used snap on but better than ebay items it rears old stored codes too.

I unlocked the airbag module on mine cost £35 which deleted codes for under seat wires

So the 'mapping' side of it, I understand this is locked via a code of some description.

What about diagnostics? Is that locked too? Or can I fault find on other peoples cars but just not load a map on?

Yes ONLY the uploading of maps is locked diagnostics is open so is if you open the airbag and abs parts of it

You can fault find / wipe faults on any car for free. No unlock needed (unless you need to buy the additional Modules, ABS / Airbag etc).

Ok wicked thank you.

How do I go about buying one and the relevant codes?

Diagnostics work just like OBDII readers, they arent locked by ECU.

I think Henk initially planned for user to buy RSTuner -> use it, (it locks to that ecu) then they unlock it and sell it when it's unlocked.

Instead, people sell them locked and buyer unlocks it from <old> ECU.

Diagnostics I found almost identical to OBDII readers, although my DTC code reader throws up an 00 unknown code which the RSTuner never - Clip is far superior for that. The RSTuner can get abs/airbag modules on top to further improve it's functionality over OBDII readers - these are not 'per ecu' either.

The locking is only for mapping - Older maps were not tied to the car but I think Henk has written in an algorithm or lock in the later maps meaning I cant share maps with you

Ive used one various times over the years, i find the easiest way these days is just to buy one brand new, henk emails you the map for your car and then punt it on, or keep it for fault reading.

sure its only about 30 quid for the module to unlock the obd code reader to any obd car so you can fault code read on any manufacturer not just renault

to map your mates car assuming you would want to keep it locked to yours you would unlock it, map his then unlock it again to lock it to yours rather than doing yours first so unlock, map urs, unlock map his and unlock to do yours again!!

Buy one use it for diagnostics on any car, get unlock code it then works on your car for mapping. You then get your friend to purchase his own unlock code so he can map his car!

Once done you can then re use it on your car with the unlock code you bought (So i was told by Henk).

As for diagnostics its brilliant and can get live data from many sensors on the car and can test modules etc, say for instance priming fuel pump, checking aircon switches on off correctly. It does s**t loads tbh someone with a fair bit more diagnostic knowledge shall give a full breakdown of its abilities @ chipmk1

Early RSTuners cannot do pops n bangs but you can if you want to take that risk share maps as they are not locked to the vin. The newer versions obviously support pops n bangs but each map is locked to your cars vin so anyone who tries to sell you a new version with maps is a r****d.

They are very very easy to use to many it looks a very daunting task, you shall laugh when you do it.

I knocked a guide up things may have changed slightly but you get the jist of it

Ah I didn't realise your unlock code was valid on the unit even if someone else subsequently locks it to their car?
I just assumed once you'd unlocked it once that was it, if you lent it to someone else and they used it you had to repurchase an unlock code to get it back to yours again?

This kind of answers the question of was going to ask before I'd even thought of it...
If I buy one, and one of the maps, and my friend buys another map for his and the unlock for his car, can we then share the maps between us as we choose?
Reading what you've put above it seems not but just wanted to confirm.

I read above that I can buy the unlock for fault reading other manufacturers codes, this is a good thing, but will the RST read other Renault cars already without need to unlock?

Are the ABS and Airbag unlock items locked to the individual car also or would I be able to read other Renault vehicles codes with it??

Still seems some confusion, so if I but one with a 98Ron map already on it 2nd hand I don't need to unlock it to put that map on my car? Do I need to pay for anything other than the rstuner

If you are putting it on a different car you need to pay for a license to unlock it with.

As for if you can use the map, only if their car is the same revision as software as yours, so no good trying to put a ph1 map on a 182 etc.

On the older RS Tuners they can, not sure if the new ones lock them down further or not.

It's not about what rstuner is, it's more to do with the map.

I could use the 98Ron map that Pat 182 (still need to give you the disc back) gave me. However I couldn't use the pops & bangs map that @adamjcat had just brought.
@-Danman- also bought a RSTuner and could use the 98Ron map I gave him, but couldn't use my P&B map that I had just purchased.

Basically Henk has started including the VIN (at a guess) in the map so it will only write to that car. The older maps are fine but ones purchased recently are not.

Adam's P&B wrote fine to my ECU but failed right at the very end which is when it tried to verify.

Hope this clears things up!

So if I bought a second-hand rstuner I could just get a map sent to me from someone on here? Don't want pops and bangs
