Rug behind the dash

I was trying to lighten so I wonder if there is any problem if I take away the rug behind the dash? Is just related with the acoustic insulation or has another function? (As thermal, maybe) Has anyone tried?

Pretty certain most serious track guys and racers have removed it, it's on my list when I get round to removing dash again, AFAIK it's just sound deadening/insulation
