Ruined gearbox on clio rs 200 £2500 to fix by Renault



That's the same hourly rate as VW ifrc. Renault are a load of b****cks at prices. Either get your 'box from ebay or get them to pay their half for a box from them and get a specialist to fit it.

They have the same hourly labour rate at Jaguar £120 an hour!!! What the hell, sorry Renault but you are not a luxury car brand so how do you justify such a ridiculous rate!!

You arent paying for a car though, you are paying for labour to work on a car and dearlership facilities in which to do so, why would it make a difference what make car it is to how much per hour the labour charge for a qualified technician is?

The mechanics get paid roughly the same wether they work for renault or jag, so why should they get charged out differently?

Dont get me wrong I still think its expensive, but I feel that irrelevant of the make of car, I dont see why being a renault should make it cheaper, time is time?

The gearbox is £1k overpriced!

Remember to get the clutch done at the same time. Pointless to put a used clutch back in.

Valid point i guess the overheads probably arnt much higher. Just in my head a renault is a cheap car manufactuer yet if you want anything doing to maintain it you may as well have a jag lol.

I know tyhe gearbox is massively inflated in fact all the costings are. At the end of the day final figure of £811 and they will give my £80 diagnostics fee back is no where near as bad as this could have been. I have expressed my exstreme frustration and played every card I have to up the contribution. The car is quickly getting worse so I really need a quick fix. My main concern is after sales and if any more issues crop up with the box renault have full knowledge of my case. If it goes again prematurely there will be hell to pay Renault uk!!

I purchased the car privately in April this year. The guy I purchased it from was the owner from new the car did not exhibit and gearbox issues at the time I purchased it otherwise Id have questioned it.

It was very well looked after and the gearbox failure was not a result of heavy abuse thats for sure. From ym understand one of the synch rings had worn heavily and disintegrated almost into the box itself. The metal shards floating around in the box have then buggered the rest of the box, so none of the gears can be selected.

Crunching of the gears was atributed to this and surprise surprise their only solution low and behold was an entirely new box. Even if there was another fix you can bet your bottom dollar a bloody dealer wouldnt tell ya.

Never liked stealerships so when Renault UK asked me if I was a loyal customer within their dealership network, you can guess what followed :)

From my experience, the Renault coffee is not up to the standard of BMW or Audi, so labour should be priced accordingly..

lol i can certainly vouch for that. had a cup whilst i was waiting on the diagnostics and it was pretty rough to say the least.

it was early in the morning so i think homes under the hammer was on so wernt complaining there lol. bloody jezza gets everywhere these days

I had yet another surprise today.

Took the clio to my mates garage and stripped the rear brakes. The pads had rusted into the runners like the fronts had done a few months before. Because they wernt retracting when you let off the brake pedal they were binding pretty bad. On closer inspection they had seized so bad that the caliper piston had cracked the pad!!

Mate reckons they were the original pads and there was no copper grease put on them.

Really hasnt been a great month for the clio :(

my friend pointed out that there was no sign of copper grease being used, which is why the pads rusted into the runners.

on the upside no more sqealing :)

they're not supposed to have copper grease, if your mate has used it, slap him, slap him HARD

we see problems with the brakes all the time, a lot of places these days class a service as an oil and filter/s change, the brakes must be stripped once a year IMO

The mind boggles at that comment.

It's almost as bad as the response I've had about premature Recaro bolster and steering wheel wear from SJ Cook / Renault UK.

The bit about it being used as a track car..? It's a track focused car with a lap timer on the dash, why should that be reasoning for it going wrong?

I said 'oh wait' because your reply is a typical RSUK /SJ Cook response of the user obviously being at fault!

Because the person driving it my be a spoon. I was only offering a reasoning to why. Just because it's a track car, doesn't mean it will put up with sledge hammer gear changes.

Regardless what RUK or SJCooks say, what does that have to do with me?

It's hardly an isolated case though is it!

You're essentially a Renault ambassador with the cup series and SJ Cook is of no relation?

We don't know if that's the case, hence my question...

Racing in clio cup doesn't make me an ambassador, it makes me a customer.

SJCooks is owned by a group of which my Uncle is on the board... But it's nothing to do with me?

That sounds s**t OP. That said I know of several people that would go through gearboxes every 10k miles if they drive everywhere like the occasions I've seen them.

Mechanical sympathy goes a long way and if you've only driven the car for 3k miles of its life, the damage may have already been done when you bought it.

i have a 1.2 mk3 clio,10 plate. not sure if i have the same problem with my gear box. sometimes its driving nice changing gears nicely then it wont let me go into either 1st,2nd or 3rd. i have to dip the clutch and try putting it in and sometimes it crunches. not sure if its the same as yours and mines only on 34k. still have warranty and the dealers already came to have a look and sprayed some lubricant on something in the engine bay and said something was dry as a bone. drove fine for a few miles then the problem came back. sorry if it looks like im stealing your thread but just curious to see if its the same problem as you.

The car has finally had the box replaced.!!

Noticed a few things whilst driving it back
1) still struggles to engage a gear even after you have let the car warm up for a few minutes, I expected this to stop with the new box
2) the clutch is now ridiculously heavy

However gear changes feel alot more certain and direct whilst driving (feel like my old saxo with a short shifter). Still quite notchy which im suprised at but Ill let the box bed in before I start questioning things.

The dealer was definitely hiding info from me though. I asked them to photograph the failed synchro and condition of the clutch (which apparently is in great condition) but they 'forgot' to take these images and ended up re-assembling the box before they realised. Total bolloks really. According to the technician the box now gets returned to head office for assesment etc.

I havnt quite given up yet, I will now put together a formal letter along with the report from the dealer and send it to renault UK. See if I can encourage further reimbursement. Still an £810 bill which at this time of the year is a killer.

I'd take it back if I were you mate, it doesn't sound right. The clutch should be no different. They won't have been able to photograph the syncro as it's inside the gearbox, they won't have opened the 'box up at the dealership, it's not their area of expertise.

I have this too, only after they replaced my engine though.

I had this when my box was replaced. When I originally took It in I had crunching into gears but then after that could not engage any gears. New box was put in and gear changes felt a lot smoother but then occasionally couldn't engage gears still. Took it back and it was a master cylinder fault which they replaced free of charge.

had my car booked in today for my gearbox problem,they said was running all fine on the ramps but on the road it was playing up again. they said they rung a gearbox specialist up and got told it needed a gearbox oil changing. that explains how its runs fine when cold but when it warms up it plays up. i think..

when mine went i physically couldnt select anything when cold. Even after 15 minutes it would struggle, you had to crunch the first gear shift and things eased slightly from there.

If things are notchy when its cold might just be the gearbox fluid but when the syncro went on mine you simply couldnt get any gear.

Good luck mate and i hope it is just a fluid change, certainly cheaper than a potential £2500 repair bill!!
