I'd love to be employed by RUK and go round all the dealerships cracking the whip, would be hilarious! I remember telling the RTE at a dealership in Scotland how to fix something on Chic's car over the phone as he didn't have a clue

I feel sorry for the guy, Chic doesn't really take much stupidity!

I would have thought a franchise with Renault is something worth a lot of cash so it would be very easy for Renault UK to have the dealers by the balls, I got my current Twingo from a Toyota dealership and the level of service, and standards is just night and day compared to Renault

The amount of rules and regulations that are forced onto independent dealerships by Toyota is huge.

They are very keen for their standards to be present right down to the dealers even though the dealers are also potentially citreon dealers etc too

I am waiting on a response from renault at the minute.

If they offer 75% up from 61% ill take it, as it works out I pay £600 which even I buy the new box from ebay wont be cheaper.

I will ask to take this further but its already being dealt with by the head of customer services, so not sure where that will get me.

If they stick at 61% I will get a new box and get a local garage to fit it should cost around £600. If I can push renault in the right direction I might be able to get 61% off of £600, as surely the contribution is a gesture of good will to put right their crap manufacturing regardless of how/ where its fixed (doubtful on that though)

Its my thirds french car now and I have to say I dont have many good things to say about them. A 19k car with a gearbox lasting around thw 20k mark is a disgrace, clutch possibly yes but the whole box no chance!!!

The TL4 is a piece of s**t, mechanically.

Let mine get properly fucked up before I took it in, was under warranty though and I told them exactly what was wrong. On inspection they said it had a "Serious Malfunction", guy said there was bits of metal everywhere and it was chewed to bits. Even the updated version was problematic, asked for exact part numbers of each when I had mine fixed.

Some people have managed to get theirs sorted out of warranty I think but doubt they are under any obligation to fix FOC. Think you've done well to get 60-odd % off. Although £600 for fitting a gearbox, are they that expensive?

Best of luck with this mate. I find it amazing that they are trying to mug people off so blatantly. 20k is not acceptable for a gearbox.

  clio 3 RS200
When I purchase the car earlier this year it had 18k on the clock and didnt have this issue. It nearer 21k and this happens.

They have offered 65% as a very final offer and I frankly dont think they will budge anymore. Despite me quoting everything I found on all the forums they dont care really. Turns out I have 2 options.

1) Pay renault £881 where i get a warranty, courtesy car etc whilst they sort it out and earns me some kind of loyalty (not worth crap) with renault in case of future issues.
2) Get the gearbox from ebay for £360 and pay a local garage around £300 to fit (more hassle though)

Thats a possible difference of around £200 and for that I might just accept Renault UK's offer to be honest. I have alot more comeback later down the line if the gearbox has further issues and it will save me a lot of hassle.

I dont want to put any more business their way but to get the 200 back on the road quickly and working 100% renault might be the best bet here.

If anyone has the same issue and needs any help let me know

Cheers all

You will only get 12 months warranty on the new renault box too, so not really any better off.

  clio 3 RS200
both the gearbox off ebay and the one from the dealer have a 12 month warranty.

If renault covers the whole thing so it will make any future claim(s) far more simple. Getting anything back from a small private garage will be far more tricky.

I just want gearbox put right so I can start enjoying the car again. I love the clio 200 just gutted about what has happened, slightly knocked my confidence in french cars a bit :(

75% is the minimum you should get IMO. The Clio 197/200 gearbox is rubbish. My parents are Renault dealers in France and we had to change a few gearbox under Warranty...

The worst car we've seen was a Clio 200. Approximately 9000m and we had to change the gearbox... For a second time !!!!

Don't give up. You can try another dealer, sometimes it does help, but do not accept an offer under 75% IMO ;)

The issue is the offer was made by the head of customer services in the uk so the offer is unlikely to increase. The car is a year out of warranty so I need to be kind of realistic as to what I can get.

I know the quality of the gearboxes is crap but my hands are tied unless I try and get this sorted off my own back. They arnt strictly obliged to help in anyway and I don't fancy the stress of taking them to court. If it doesn't get sorted soon then I have a feeling the gearbox will fail completely :( I just want my clio to work properly is that too much to ask renault!!

Buy the Renault one. Then in 11 months time make sure you break it. Then you get another new one so should feel like you got your money's worth. LOl.

Renault cust svs were pretty fair with me and my 200 was 11 months out of warranty, they could have just sais no!

If my box went, I'd have a word with one of the specialists like fred or mick and get them to fit one of the ebay boxes, cheaper and probably a better quality job!

The mind boggles at that comment.

It's almost as bad as the response I've had about premature Recaro bolster and steering wheel wear from SJ Cook / Renault UK.

Oh wait...

Lol! Never made that connection previously.

The positively glowing review of the Clio 4 that Josh posted a few months back makes a lot of sense now. Wonder if the gearbox in that is made out of brie?

Its convenience more than anything. For everday I take off work I will lose money so that needs to be factored in.

when did you buy the car? Was it from a dealer?

the owner before me purchased it brand new. i knew the guy pretty well so can safely say the car was never tracked or abused.

hoping to get the car booked in soon as possible as it took me 15 minutes to get a gear this morning which made me late for work!!

Lol point taken. Thankfully only took 5 minutes to locate 1st gear today, so I was on time for the first time in 2 weeks :)

My first 172 gearbox failed in a big way, imported car 2 1/2 years old 60% contribution by renault on gearbox/clutch and labour, and it was driver abuse. :approve:

My experience is that Renault UK CS are very fair when compared to other manufacturers when contributing to problems that have arisen after the manufacturers warranty has expired. I had a friends with a VW Eos, owned since 12 months old, serviced at the supplying dealer since new. 1 month outside of the manufacturers warranty then roof started causing problems. I suggested they call VW UK CS becuase I presumed they would be at least as generous as Renault are on many of their cases but I couldnt of been any more wrong..... They didnt want to know at all and wouldnt offer to pay for it or even contribute to the repair.

Just write to a tabloid newspaper, get the editor to write back saying they'd be interested in publishing a story (with the amount of people having issues and Renault not paying up. They'll love that) and let Renault know you have a national paper with good interest in the story. Basically saying if they don't sort it out they'll have the papers to deal with. - lost sales etc etc they'll pay up.

I agree i didnt expect renault to offer anything. However a bill of £2500 is hugely inflated so the 35% I am still expected to pay contains a large profit margin without a doubt. The dealers are a rip off and I am currently waiting on a full cost breakdown of the work so I can laugh at it!!

They make out they doing me a favour well not really because if they insisted on 2500 id have gone else where. I can get a box and fitting for around £700-800 so I think they are having a laugh with 2.5k to be fair.

I have already mentioned about taking the case furher but it made little difference. They will simply simply state that they have made a contribution even though they wernt legally obliged to do so and I cant see a court over turning this gesture and making them pay for the entire thing

I got my 57 plate done in April with a 75% contribution for the box and a clutch heavily discounted.

In my experience they all call themselves head of customer service. If they insist that is best they can do, ask, and keep asking for their boss. I got stuck on 60 % for a while

Car had 50k on it

Bmit- no idea how you managed to achieve that pretty impressive to be fair! Issue is have spoken to head of customer derbies apparently for quite some length. I have nothing else up my sleeve. I have threatened to take this further and still 65% is the best offer. The longer this takes the worse it will become to drive. I need it sorted ASAP really already been negotiating for best part of 2 weeks :(

I just stuck with the same argument. Do you think it is reasonable that a gearbox lasts less than 50k miles. Would you call it satisfactory quality. Do you think I should be paying for an obviously faulty part.. They will apologize a lot, giving you the opportunity to ask for them to sort it out. Just say they agree with it not being acceptable because they wouldn't have offered anything if not. When you hit a wall with them, ask to speak to add the next person up the chain and give the same argument again. Just ask nicely. I.e I understand you cannot offer anymore, please can you pass me on to your boss so I can talk to them.

Make sure if they ask to call you back, agree on a time and date latest. And give them hell if they don't stick to their side of the bargain.

My favourite was when they try to fob you off with manager is busy now .. I just said its ok ill wait. I think they must be targeted on getting thru calls because after 5mins they carry on trying to convince you to take the offer. I then told them to get off their chair go to the manager and tell them I'm waiting and ask when I can expect theyll be free. Hey presto manager free

Also hold in your back pocket a ranting post on Renaultsport forum. I didn't have to but things seem to get picked up there quickly

I have sent renault UK many links that I have gathered over the past few weeks, even the link to this thread.

They are at the stage where nothing I say will make a difference and unless I take some legal action I cant see what else I can do. Their intial offer of 30% was a joke. I said if they offered 75% I would accept that happily but they just wont budge at 65%

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
I think that because its now an out of date model and hence they arent selling them anymore, they dont care if people realise what utter garbage the boxes were, cause it wont greatly effect sales of the new turbo 200 which has a different box.

So I reckon thats why in the past they were paying more but now are just flipping customers the bird instead.

"loyalty" is something they want from RS customers, but not something they intend to give back if it leaves them out of pocket!

Get this. Just had a breakdown of the initial charge
New Gearbox £1355.20 Including vat, plus gearbox nuts x2 £16.56 including vat, - Total £1371.76 including vat.

Labour 8 hours @ £99 per hour pre vat, Total £950.40 including vat.

Total parts and labour including vat £2322.16

They have the same hourly labour rate at Jaguar £120 an hour!!! What the hell, sorry Renault but you are not a luxury car brand so how do you justify such a ridiculous rate!!
