Running costs of a 1.4 RT

Was just wondering how much money you would say you need to have availiable to spend on your car (including petrol costs etc) in your opinion in order to run a 1.4 rt doing about 150 miles a week. Im just trying to work out if I really can afford to run a car just now as I have other financial commitments but really, really want a car.

personally id say about £200-£250 a month pob a slight over estimate but that includes petrol insurance, mot services etc, and a bit more to account for any parts that need replacing.

Id imagine not much more than other smaller engined cars.



Tax its 109 (I think)

A new exhaust cost me 90 the other day, just depends if its in good nick or not to any extra costs

Im just really strugling to decide whther or not I can afford to run it. Like I say I really want to get it but in a way I cant afford it. Ive been thinking about this for ages and just cant decide one way or the other


What sort of MPG do you get from a 1.4 RT?

i get around 100 miles to 15 quid, saying that i do have a heavy right foot.

Tax is 65 quid for 6 months.

Insurance for mine is around 100 a month

Other costs such as maintenence bills arent accounted for, thats what i got a credit card for, then pay that off over a few months, so it doesnt sting as much

I dunno how much my insurance is this year (renewal in about a month) but last year my insurace 3pft on an RT worth £2k was £995 for a year. I usually get 90-100 miles for every £10 petrol i put in, and i DO tend to drive it in the higher rev ranges.

If you pick an lovely car that just need an annual MoT, insurance, tax and petrol putting in it - then MPG is obviously going to make a difference.

IMO with any 10+ year old car like a Clio 1.4 RT, youre going to have to buy wisely and with some expertise in order to keep costs as simple as that.

If youre simply looking for the cheapest motoring possible, Id buy the very best condition car you can find from a mainstream manufacturer. Few models of car can be called "cheap to run" on a universal basis for that model - by the time you get to a few years old, the care a car has received makes all the difference in terms of future cost.

In general, the Mk1 1.4 RT is a durable car and most of the normally expensive parts (e.g. electric switches etc) can be found from the breaking/spares sections. Id expect a good 35-45mpg with considerate driving and low servicing and maintenance costs with careful buying/considerate use.

motorway miles i can get 120 miles out of a tenner, town your looking at 80- 90, parts are cheap cos theres a few in the scrappies now so shouldnt be too bad,

hi, ive just bought a Mk1 clio 1.4 RT recently and this info is really good cheers guys. Got to tax it at the end of feb, how much do you think that will be? And do you find you have had alot of problems with ur 1.4 RTs?

Ive had no problems in my 11 months of owning my RT. Sunroof was a bit leaky, but is fine at the moment.

I think tax is £110 ish for 12 months

Hardly anything with the Mrss RT!

Had it just over 2 years, its superb on fuel, cheap to insure and been really reliable, hardly had to do anything on it in this time...

Cheers for that dudelove. So the MPG gd aswell? I bought it of a guy off here (ian h) got a really good deal. done quite a few miles bout looks good and seems to run really well.

There are already pics of ur car on the site mattysey. If you look at the post in the for sale section with your car (ian hs at the time) in it you will find the pics. I liked the look of Ian Hs car and it looks like a pretty good car, the one I was looking at was very very similar in terms of what had been done to it just that it was a different colour.
