rusty arches

Am tackling my slightly rusted rear arch tommorow. Its only bubbled under the paint ver slightly - have got some rust repair stuff and the correct body colour paint from renault - so what the best way to tackle the prob?

I would say sand down to bare metal, treat any rust remaining, and then prime, paint and laqure, your looking at atleast 3 days for the paint to dry. You really need to do it inside, somewhere that is heated in this weather, i hope you have spray paint from Renault, if not go to halfords and get a couple of cans, refer to the colour coding thread on the details of spraying, most is relevent

If you dont know whats the best way to tackle it, dont do it mate! Youll f**k it up and your car will look sh*t!

Pay someone to fix it for you!

I was quoted £250 and that was welding a plate in and spraying!

Dont be cheap, mate its not worth it!

best repair is to weld in a arch kit. If you try to bodge it up you must remove all the old rust and seal up any unpainted areas.if you dont it will just bubble back through.

The arch kit replaces about 6-7 inches (upwards)of the original arch all the way along the arch(from bumper to sill). You weld them in place then smooth them into the car/rear quarter with body filler. These are the only real long lasting repair you can do other than replace the rear quarters.

Brill, save me the 270 odd quid for the panels!

If you got a welder that is! and someone who can weld properly ;) O did i put that? i wonder who is a qualified welder than can do it?

Among my many engineering skills one is welding. Unfortunately not really very good with body filler . Dont suppose it can be that hard.

if you fit arch kits or rear panels they both still need welding.

I think he means that he can save the money lol

Yea, i wonder who is a qualified welder, i think i have a mate that does it, but hes a bit of a c**k, and i dont think his welding is really that good.

I mean, ill probably end up with wavy wings from the heat.

Crap, then ill have to go get painted again.........why cant they make cars out of plastic.

An average welder could fit an arch as you dont see the weld it just needs to be good enough to hold. You grind/smooth the welds down and then everything is smoothed over/blended in with filler.

As a fully qualified welder I should hope that its a damn site better than good enough to hold!....A decent welder will do it in stages to prevent any heat distortion. The quality of the materials in panels is rubbish to say the least!

You filler it over anyway so whats a little distortion around the weld joint going to matter and its not a chassis or strengthening point so you dont have to go overboard with the weld do you.

Because its professional practice not to get any distortion

Wether bodyshops follow that rule i suppose depends on where you have the repair done. Ive seen some bodged repairs where the arch kit was just tacked on at intervals, now thats slack. They do say you get what you pay for though dont they.

they do indeed, but then again i never pay Mike that much and i certainly dont leave a tip! lol
 Wait till i get to your place BenDER boy!.......Ever seen a 16v with fully welded doors and the windows covered in 5 inch steel plate!

yes, which is why i dont want the work done by you ;)

JKing bud.......you welcome to hack at my car anytime!

And ill get old fatherted to spray it for a blow and some wine gums.

Bloody hell - thanks for the advice - to be honest, im thinking of selling her in a couple of months so i may just fill it in and spray it although, i dont want it to look worse than it already does.... hmmm, i need a good price and a good garage (the stuff that dreams are made out of). I didnt manage to do it this weekend like i said i would cozs i got new wing mirror trims and had to spray them instead - didnt think that would take long but it did! Plus, i cant get them shiny like the rest of the body work! Still look a LOT better tho!

Any moter factors will sell them. About £10>£20 each.
So itd cost just under £300 to get 16v arches welded in? Would I be able to get those arches easy enough? I got rusty arches as well but Im hoping to keep my baby til I can really afford somat powerful, 5 years at least!

Dunno if I really wanna end up with a 16v replica tho

The arch kit only relaces the edges of the arches it isnt the complete arch buldge. To fit valver arches to normal rear quarters you would need to fit valver rear quarters im afraid.
