Rusty Rear brake discs 172 cup

  A4 Avant & A3
Right, i know brake discs rust when not used for a little bit in this kind of weather, but my rear brake discs don't actually seem to get rid of the rust.
I drive to work (about 8 miles) and when at work they are still covered in rust, there are some 'silver' rings around it where it's coming off but not much.

Just wondering if this is normal??.. i'm sure it's not, is there something up with the discs/pads??

Mark aka Little "chavy" Newms had this problem on his cup, renault just replaced the pads under warranty. Can you jack it up get the wheel off and get a mate to see if the caliper is moving when you apply the brakes? Other option is maybe take the pads out and rough them with sand paper.

Remember the rear disks do very little so 8 miles depending on the driving might not clear them. What's it like after long journeys?

after long journeys there are still rust rings around the disc, i will jack the car up & have a good look at it. might get down the dealers under warranty if any probs...

cheers

The Brakes Tend To Rust Up Because They Do Little Work Change The Pads And It Should Be Fine (just Realised Ive Typed It In Caps Sorry!!!) WOW IT CHANGES IT AUTOMATICALLY

Pads/discs dependant on teh age have just worn unevenly, have a look att ehm, or if you atren't confident a garage will sort it no probs

The rear brakes don't do a lot, if anything on 172 Cups. A lot, including mine are failing MOT's due to 0% efficiency coming from the rear brakes. It is a big problem, and I am trying to work with Renault customer service to see what I can do to resolve the problem. I am thinking about putting in a complaint to VOSA, as Renault seem to be ignoring the problem, and the dealers don't know what they are talking about.

Have a read of this

I will let you know how I get on, and if I eventually get anywhere.

Hell.. so it could be a bigger problem down the line then... (well come MOT time, 1st MOT November '06)
I will definitly jack the thing up & have a look, possibly change the pads.
How come the 172 cup doesn't use the rear brakes much then? any reason for this?
The car is only 2 years old, so surely the discs are ok??? (better bloody well be anyway!! lol)
I have found that the rear brakes were rusting on pretty hard over night causing them to 'crack' off when reversing off my drive in the mornings.. but that seems to have gone at the moment.

I'll just have a look & see what i can see...

I can't believe people keep saying the rear disks don't do much ! Its true that the fronts do most of the braking ( around 75 - 80% ) if you didn't need em they would fit drums instead of disks . And by the way , my rears work perfectly fine . I need to change the disks as they are well worn down , and i'm on my second set of pads and they are down to 3mm . So maybe it was the rear brake fairy wearing em away after all and not my right foot ,lol ;)

Norris 309, I believe the 172 Cup doesn't use its rear brakes that much because the rear compensator isn't attached to the rear axle, and doesn't have a load valve. Therefore, the bias is never changed between the front and rear brakes. The compensator on the 172 cup isn't adjustable, and was meant to be set from new. That is why I am talking to Renault. I am trying to work out how I can get my rear brakes to work, if the compensator isn't adjustable, and if it was set at what ever % bias as standard, why is it now reading as 0%.

Sounds a bit dodgy to me.. (as i'm sure it does to you)
I'm gonna check mine now (while it's still under warranty!), after reading all this ... got me thinking now lol

my rear discs go rusty as fuk after washing - i can leave the car for a few days then before driving and any rust is gone from my discs within a couple of miles - i would say you have a problem mate. although mine is a full fat 172 not a cup but wwould have thought they would be the same set up

No, its a different set up, due to no abs and load valve. Plus the rear compensator is adjustable on the full fat.
