S2 GTI Sundance Yellow OCD

  S2 106 GTI
Well well well! been a quite member for a while now since selling my evo and ep3 type r, really wanted another evo but the funds went on something a lot better!!

We have managed to buy a brand new house in a lovely location, house should be finished next july/aug - 3 bedroom, garage, garden, driveway to park four.. yes FOUR cars on! looking forward to it.

In the mean time I wanted to feed the speed freak inside, I didn't want to spend a fortune on a car so I looked high and low for something cheap….. suddenly I ended up browsing 106 GTI's - Always loved the look of them and thought yeah I'll have one for the time being.

I ended up driving all over for a decent example (proved bloody hard!!) in the end I found one fairly local, but in a colour I wasn't really wanting. I went to view and as soon as I saw it I loved it, I had a good look around and the owner's dad had done most of the work on the car so was all good… I thought!
The car had a couple of mods which inc -
-Janspeed exhaust
-Raceland 4-2-1 manifold
-Ecosse airfilter
-Show cage (power coated in sundance yellow)
-Bilstein suspension

There was another sundance gti on the driveway which they were breaking and I liked the look of some of the mods so I made a deal with the wheels, rear lights and because the front bumper on the one I was buying was slightly scuffed to swap it over.

I went to pick it up a couple of weeks later due to work commitments and brought it home.

After a couple of weeks I bought an interior which had only done 10k! as the other was slightly worn, sprayed the mirror covers to match the alloys….also a few things started making noises, wheel bearing decided to go, exhaust bracket snapped and found the cat on the car - the elements inside were shot at, also was making a whirring noise when the clutch was disengaged.

I removed the knackered wheel bearing and decided to replace both, to which things started to turn sour… both drive shafts where different (one was tapered and the other straight cut where the bearing sits) I ended up buying two brand new ones.
I was attaching the calliper and noticed one wasn't retracting, took a closer look and noticed it was f%%cked.. So I bought a set of GTI-6 Callipers.
The exhaust was an easy fix as I'm handy with a welder, the whirring noise was still a mystery.

Another couple of days past and suddenly the PAS pump gave up, so guess what on the phone to buy a new one. fitted it and everything seemed to be running fine.. until there was lack of power when you put your foot down - a mate took a look and the clutch had gone so bought an upgraded clutch.

Few weeks past and things where running well, until the whirring noise got worse and was getting harder to get into gear. Back into the garage to find the sycro had gone in 1,2,3 and the input shaft bearing was making the noise. I searched for a reconditioned box and while the box was out I bought a Quife LSD.

Since the engine was partly in bits I thought I may swell clean the engine bay up as there was some surface rust in some hard to get areas. So out came the engine!

The surface rust turned out to be rotten! so I ended up cutting a patching in parts. While the car was up on stands I took a good look underneath only to find that rust was hidden by underseal! The grinder came out and removed all the underseal around the rotten areas, I had to make some chassis parts and weld them into place,
In total the car was off the road for 7 weeks - now I have no rust (from what I can see) which was always in the back of my mind.

While the car was off the road I bought some bilsteins B8's, Pugsport exhaust and refurbed the callipers and painted them red.

Here are a few pics from the build.

I wanted one of these years ago but a lot at the time had the rear subframe issue and it kind of put me off.

Yours looks great and those wheels are very suited to it.

Cheers guys, I know the colour isn't to everyones taste but it grows on you- but since I have bought it and have been driving it around. Whenever I go out and park up Im approached by someone wanting to buy it!

Not a fan of 106GTI's at all. Hopefully you'll be in something better soon. ;)

Lovely mate. By far the most fun i've had in any car. That is a major compliment considering just how sloppy most of the gear changes are on them.

Would have another no problem.

The gears are sloppy in comparison to my Evo and R26 but find them ok, managed to tighten them up with new stainless gear linkages, no play at all now. The LSD in it though is unreal grips when throwing it into corners.

Lucky the one I've just bought just got a full refurb, only done 700miles so should be ok for a few years!

They're actually not bad at all on gearboxes. The main time they fail is when you have fools who can't drive behind the wheel... Spent a large amount of time in the 106/Saxo world with a lot of mates having them too and it was only the careless that ever needed a box.

Shame you hadn't known about the rust issues in the bay, common problem and tbh you'll be hard pushed to find an example without it unless you buy one off somebody truly enthusiastic about their car.

Looks lovely though, enjoy her! Awesome fun they are.

Yeah was annoyed when I found all the rust and parts had been cheaply fixed, things like replacing the engine mounts - the previous owner had only replaced the lower mount instead of replacing all 3. But now in my possession it will be truly looked after

Great example, I would love a yellow one!

Gearboxes are something you will get use to changing, I have gone through a fair few of them. Hopefully the refurbished one should last you. I currently have 4 spares :\

A good thing to do with the 306 gti-6 callipers is also change the master cylinder over to a gti-6 one among with some braided lines, it makes such a difference to how they feel.

Already have braided line - again there not in great condition so will change them in the coming months, the GTI 6 master cylinder is something I was on the look out for when the car was in bits, but couldn't find one in time.

I love these!
A dude I know had one from new in this colour, he'd rag it everywhere even from cold, it was properly knackered when he sold it. Shame really as it was a nice car till he got it. It ended up with a 4" exhaust on it & a filter, no other mods though, but it was well & truly thrashed.

*Update*

Well since I haven't updated for a few months thought I better had add to my project.

First off between xmas and new year my new gearbox decided to make some strange noises! because of the time and money I just garaged it and left it until after the new year….

While the pug was garaged I removed the headlights and took them apart and sprayed the internals black which made it look a lot better!

When I got back home I decided to have a look at the gearbox…. Upon removing the end casing this was what I found!

Lucky for me the old gear box I removed was sat there doing nothing so managed to remove it and use that! The car is fully up and running once again, also treated myself to a pugsport 3" exhaust system!

I am waiting to get booked into PipeWerx to get a sports cat fitted as because its a full system with decat its far too loud for my liking, pops and the overrun sounds brilliant! but for a daily drive its too much for me.

Haven't updated in a while, mainly because I have been putting all my money towards the new house.

I have recently bought a couple of things to help improve a slight knock which started to appear a few weeks back
13409661024_36391b9565_z.png

Should be getting fitted next monday. Also bought a sport cat to go with my pugsport as everyday driving is very loud! so thought it will quieten it down but still have free flow.

Few pics after I detailed it over the weekend.
