satnav in 03 172

  GW Clio 200

i am (or should i say, will be on friday) the proud owner of an 03 172 which is the car i have lusted after since i fitst seen one. the car i am getting doesnt have satnav but i am very interested in fitting it. i dont want a removeable pda type or third party (non-renault) unit, i want the one that would have come if it had been fitted originally. i dont want to even ask at local renault dealer for fear of him taking my pants right down so does anyone know if there is an alternative place to buy or any other suggestions at all? i have looked on ebay with no luck. where abouts does it fit in relation to the stereo/dash etc?

ps - i did have a t reg 1.6 16v clio which was the best clio money could buy back then. the logbook simply said 1.6 16V. when i mentioned it to the dealer today, he said there was no such car, only an RSi. I know for a fact it wasnt RSi, can anyone else remember the car i had?? i have only seen another few on the road, it was the first (and only at the time) clio with the double type headlights. sorry to go off topic, just the dealer has made me think i have gone round the bend!

thanks in advance

As far as I know the Mk2 phase 1 Clio came as the S (1.4 8v), Si (1.4 16v) and the RSi (1.6 16v) - so yours would have been the RSi.

As for sat nav you could go for a new head unit with it built in - I have the Becker 7820 and it is amazing. In my opinion it would be a lot easier, cheaper and less hastle to go this route than to try and fit the factory Renault sat nav.

I want Sat Nav, but i didnt want the renault one.

The buttons are difficult to use on the move , they face upwards ???

Also I want to be able to take it with me should I change car.
Personally I would go for an Alpine unit.

thanks for the advice. i looked at the becker u mentioned. are the sat nav instructions just text on the units display or is there an external screen for it? the renaqult one has a big screen yes with map on etc?

The becker has a map at the right hand side of the display which tells you where to go along with a count down of the distance till the next turn. It also displays the road name on the left side of the display. It also speaks out the instructions as well, so you really dont need to see the map at all. I will try and get a pic of mine tomorrow.

the renault say nav would be costly to fit aftermarket, as it has other sensors all around the car. So it works even underground cos it takes readings from car for speed and direction as well as GPS. There are plenty of pics on this forum from my 182 which is the same sat nav as the 172 one, the carminat colour system.

It would be cheaper for you to buy aftermarket I would say. I have just ordered another map disc with TMC which tells the nav where traffic jams are and takes you round them, the renault system has this as standard but renault dont supply thm as they havnt paid the licence. doh
