Saving to go from 172 to Impreza P1

  Mk4 .:R32
I'm about to start saving my ass off to go from my recently purchased ph2 172 to an impreza P1. I figured seeing as I'm 19 and only just got my 172, I will save as much as poss until I'm 21 and get a beasty P1. I was going to save for throttle bodies, but though naaah!

What do people think, good move or not?

  Mk4 .:R32
Haha I love my 172 to bits. I just figured I will want something faster once I can get insured on a group 20 car. Planning for the future :)

I've thought about gettin a turbo for my clio, but if you buy a car thats already got a turbo, the gear box, clutch etc is already made to take more torque etc. I couldn't justify spending 6k on a conversion when I could use the same money to get a 280 bhp impreza :)

I wish. A 280bhp impreza would be fun, but what about a 280bhp clio? What would be more fun?

To be honest half the fun is speed, half is going round the twisties. Get some coilovers and you'll be happy for a while.:) I incidentally have some for sale.;)

I know 172s are well fun. I always look forward to driving mine, and giving it some down country lanes, and I also love popping it into 3rd gear as I'm on motorway slip roads and going straight into the outside lane at 110mph :) haha. Would love to do that in a chipped P1 too

As for saving for my own place, I can't see myself moving out in the next 12-18 months, I pretty much live at my girlfriends anyway. Atleast if I save up and buy an impreza I wont owe any money on it when I comes to moving out properly!!

I went through the Evo/Scooby phase:S and I have decided to keep the Ph1.Fun car and cheap to run.Goin to have a few mods done to it though.

Dreaaaammm dreamm dream dreammmmmm.

Moving out for 12-18 months?

Have you got an quotes for a 21 year old on a P1 recently? Thought about the running costs, in particular the fuel costs?

Two years to save for a P1 and the additional costs, I'll give you no hope.

  Mk4 .:R32
I know the running costs will be a b*tch. 20mpg if I drove it slowly and mad insurance n tax. I think I would cope with that though :) keep the impreza til I have kids. Infact, its a good size for a sprog in the back too :)

No mincing there Oz but i'm with you on this.

I always fancied a really fast car but recently, I have started to think, what is the point?

Ste, whay not PM Scutch and ask for his views on this.

I will do cheers mate. Theres no harm in saving up for one anyway, if I don't get one I could also just get throttle bodies and coilies ;)

I will obviously need to check insurance quotes and my montly wage nearer the time before making a definite decision, as things change all the time, and if I write my car off or get caught speeding etc not many insurance companies would want to insure me.

I think when I grow up, maybe in 3 years i'm going to buy a Veyron, I mean hopefully with living at home n all i'll be able to cope with the costs ;)

But seriously, at 19 just be happy with your 172. Get some coils, get on some trackdays and learn to drive it properly, getting a P1 so you can come off a slip road into the outside lane of a boring straight road all sounds pant wettingly boring.

If you want out and out speed, wait until you're 21 and get a bike, there's no comparison.

I used to have a new age WRX but had to sell it to buy my new house. Loved the car until I realised they are the new XR3i and a lot of idiots can get hold of them now, although the exclusive cars like 22B, P1, RB5, Type R are the best of the bunch and hold their money well if looked after.

Not only will you have to think about petrol, insurance, and servicing (tax won't be an issue as p1 was pre March 2001 I think), but you'll need to run a tracker £100 a year and also park it somewhere secure and watch anyone that follows you I kid you not. I had a £600 Prodrive spoiler ripped off mine overnight on my drive never to be seen again.

If you do get one, get a good look at the engine and service history as P1 was not the strongest engine.

Nice to see some support guys haha. It's not an impossible goal to be honest. I will be on a decent wage for ages as well ;)

One of my mates, who turns 21 this november is getting a 2002 M3. Which has similar running costs etc. I'll see how he gets on for the first year of running it!!

Dream on

I ran an Impreza in my late 20s and it isn't cheap.

If you want to pay the £2000 or so insurance (if you can even get insured) then that's up to you but personally your better off waiting till your over 25.

Its not just buying the Scooby thats going to hit you financialy, its the running costs too, far more than any Clio, even a Vee!

But if its what you want (personaly wouldn't be my choice), and you've set your heart on it, and can afford to run it - go for it, why not!:approve:

if you can afford it go for it mate. I have mates that were driving around in Z3M Coupe's and Evo's at 18-19 back in the day. Living at home 90% of income is disposable, so really as long as you're on a half decent wage insurance will be the only bother, but you should be able to insure one now for around £2k if you really search about.

go for it mate. im in pretty much the same boat as you. im boared with my 182 & want somthing bigger & faster.:approve:

Thankyou, there is light at the end of the tunnel then? Yeah like I said, I'm loving my 172, but I already know I will be bored of it by next summer and want a nice turbo :approve: I know it will get negative attention, but the area which I live is nice, and if I see any chavs hangin round it I will just batter them with a crow bar or somethin! Insurance will be a tough one though. I guess if I have 2 years NCB and I'll be 21, I'll be looking at 2000-2500!

  Mk4 .:R32
I can't say I'll be bothered about much else apart from comfort. And it can't be less comfortable than my 172 on the motorway. I will be happy knowing my car has 300bhp under the bonnet. I'm sure I won't keep it for longer than 2 years anyway, then I will get something sensible and cheaper.

Does it have to be a P1? You could just get a wrx, when you pick mates up they all have their own door and dont have to clamber over the recaros to get out and they are still quick / handle well. The other bonus being that the insurance may be cheaper and the car itself certainly will be.

  impreza sti prodrive
insurance isnt everything though. if you can aford the car who cares about running costs ect youve got somthin you love & worked for thats all that counts. dont let folks put you of mate. personaly ids rather have aqn escosse but i aint got 14k in my back pocket to get a decient 1 yet so thats what im aiming for. good look with it.

  Mk4 .:R32
cheers mate. Yeah, I'm defo going to aim for the P1. I might change my mind in 12-18 months, but for now its what I want.

  impreza sti prodrive
supose your right there mate. but for those who can should just keep working towards it & shouldnt listen to those who tell you otherwise.

I use to think things like that when I was 19, "What Car or Bike can I save up for next".

Trust me, your be paying £300 a month on insurance probably the same on petrol and all when you living at home which seems easy.

But in a couple of years time when you need to get your own place and the mortgage company ask for a £10k depsoit and £4k on fees your kick your self for wasting the money on a car.

Your better off saving for your own place then get the car you want after.

I sold my 182 recently, and am currently waiting for my JDM Impreza Spec-C to turn up (its on the boat!).

I am a little older (26), have a house, and a child. Thats kinda the reason for getting it, something bigger for the family, plus its quick and fun enough to do the odd track day and 'ring trip.

Also i wanted a car that was good enough that i didnt have to modify it, hence why the spec-c fitted the bill.

As for running costs, just gotta suck it and see!

Yea blast all your wonger on a car then the birds you pull on nights out take back to your parents house because your 30 and still at home. That will impress the ladies. Women hate blokes with stylish flats with sex in every room at any opertunity. They would much rather prefer a cosy coffee with your mum after a 1 night stand!!

Shut up you loser. Why would I still be at home when I'm 30 if I get a car when I'm 21? Plus I don't plan on being single when I'm 30 either!
I think the word you were looking for was opportunity, not opertunity. Women love men that can spell as well.

Mate you'll be shocked how quick time goes, honestly. I'm 28 now 19, seemed like last year. I did not realise its a spelling contest on here. PS Definitely is not spelt deffo. So check your own posts before having a go at me. Just a bit of helpful advice mate. Get your head out your arse. Half my mates were giving all their cash to insurance companys when I was 19. They are all still at home now. I brought a house... and now all I hear from them is they wish they did the same as house prices are triple, they all need 35 year mortgages, I'm such a looser going out with my mates all the time and bringing loads of birds back, BBQ's at weekends, all night drinking sesions on the xbox. I hate my life. If you've got nothing better to do, spell check it if you like, I could'nt give a f**k!!

I always find when you're saving up for something else, you dont really appreciate what you have.

Id get out and enjoy your clio for a bit mate, as just because the p1 is a faster car doesnt mean its going to be more fun.

  Clio 182
^^ is that your reply? Nice one!! You've obviously got nothing better to do then spell check peoples post!! Enjoy yourself mate i've got better things to do then check my own spelling let alone everybody else's!!
