MK1 Clio 16v
Hi all,
I've had my engine in my MK1 clio rebuilt recently and a strange chirping/scraping noise has started coming from the engine whenever i take my foot of the accelerator, or whenever i reverse. The noise seems to be due to the engine moving.
I put my handbrake on and put the car into reverse and gave just enough gas to lift the rear end up but not enough to move the car and it began chirping/scraping again, so my friend had a look under the bonnet to see what it was. He said it was the alternator blades catching on something as one edge of the blade was shiney (fresh metal). The noise also varies in pitch depending on what RPM the engine is running at so it would make sense to be the fan blades.
My question is, is there anything around the alternator that it could be catching on in a MK1 clio? It's a 1.8 16v engine and it never used to do it before the rebuild. I'm going to take a look at the weekend but just wanted to know your thoughts!
I took it back to the garage a few days ago to see if he knew what it was, he had a quick look under the bonnet and told me it was a gasket inbetween my exhaust manifold and the part that connects to the rest of the exhaust system. He said it allows the exhaust to flex so it doesn't snap when the engine moves. He also said the noise was that it had a split in the gasket which was allowing the exhaust gases to escape. Strange thing is though if i leave it in neutral and rev the engine, it's perfectly fine, so i don't think it could be that?
Thoughts/suggestions please!
