that doesnt sound to reasurring :( So what do you know now then thats negative about the car?

Dom

Had endless probs with mine, new gearbox, new dampers, new exhaust, Cambelt pully snapped so had to have head removed and new valves, water pipes leaked, wheel arch liners fall out, rear wheel bearing broke, new clutch cable, Had starting probs seats creak lad mad, new tdc sensor, and i feel whenever driving it feel like something major could go boom at any moment. This is all within 12 months.

Well I have never been a fan of French cars to be honest, but I liked the way mine looked when I drove past the garage. So I bought it, I never normally keep a car longer than 6 months (boredom). However I have had this over 2 years now.

Its got 78000 miles nearly, it had its belt changed at 74000 last november. New gear box casing, new accelerator cable, 2 handbrake cables and various bulbs and sundries. Oh and is has new brake pads all round.

All that doesn't mean much maybe, but previous cars were lucky to see an oil can.

BLIMEY!! thats a lot of problems within 12 months!! especially things like the gearbox going wrong! must have cost you a fortune! this worries me. Was the car abused by the prevous owner lol??

Has anyone else on this forum had problems with their clio 172's 2000-2001??

Cheers

I don't know if my car was abused, looking at the history and all the reciepts I have I don't thinks so. Not been "abused" by me. To be honest I rarely use it these days. Thats why its going up for sale.

Luckily the clutch, rear springs and tyres were replaced under the warranty after i kicked up enough fuss! there was also a shock absorber that needed to be replaced which i forgot to mention

As for the rest the exhaust cost me about £280 for a custom stainless cat back. I bought the new disc and pads from eurocarparts and fit them with my dad so that was only about £100

The worst was the cambelt, that cost me £400 from a renault specialist, renault quoted me at £620 lol

It's in mint condition, full service history, most people who see it and who repaired it (a lot) comment on it's good condition.

I would be absolutely infuriated if that was me having to spend all that in the first year aswell!!! however im used to things going wrong and having to spend out as i currently own a classic mini 1.3i and i recently had to have some welding done and that cost about £500! and ball joints needed replacing things like that! its all sorted now though thankfully. You say about your warranty does anyone no how many years warranty you get on the 2001 model 172 clio sport and what it covers???

Thanks

Dom

Warranty only lasts for 3 years from new.

I bought my car with a 1 year used car warranty and managed to have the dreaded cambelt change under this.

It's like anything If you drive the car properly and not hoon it everywhere like I've seen some members do then it can be fairly reliable.

Most people like myself have replaced the poorly designed and manufactured standard exhaust with something more substantial.

I now own a Mk2 172 Cup, I'd say the Mk1 is put together a whole lot better than the newer ones.

How did you manage to get the 1 years used car warranty with it?? did you buy from a renault dealer?

Dom

Immobiliser - needed new battery.

Renault incorrectly diagnosed a dry idler bearing whining as an alternator failure so had one of them when I didn't need one, car not been back to them ever since.

Things like an abs sensor broke because of myself trying to save £60 and not having the right conditions to change the discs!

I haven't had nothng major with mine, just odds and sods really. More annoying then anything else. Still doesn't take away from the fact I love my car lol. If I wasn't emigrating it would not be going anywhere.

iv had my 2000 172 since april this year. iv had to replace 1 damper, the exhaust, pads and discs all round, and 1 rear calliper. apart from the calliper thats pretty much standard stuff ur gunna hav to replace with any car.

the car itself is very quick, fun, handles great and looks pretty decent too. u get things going wrong with all cars really, its just how unlucky u are!

Dom,

I have had a 2003 ph2 172 for over 3 years now, paid for a good example, rather than cheaper ones that were available, and I have to say, it has been 100% reliable in that time, starts every day. The problems I have had are the same as people have mentioned, i.e changed the rubbish exhaust for a SS one when it broke, and had a new battery.

Apart from that, the usual consumables, tyres, servicing (never use Renault stealers, they are totally incompetent about Renaultsports), and brakes.

In all honesty, for a car that is used properly, returns over 30mpg, and is totally reliable, I cannot recommend the later 172 highly enough. Monaco blue is also the rarest and nicest colour....

You have to remember a 2000 car is 7 years old now so potentail issues cna happen its all down to the car and owner how reliable it is. You find many are great cars needing no more than the normal servicing and wearing a mount maybe which is cheap.
I would be absolutely infuriated if that was me having to spend all that in the first year aswell!!! You say about your warranty does anyone no how many years warranty you get on the 2001 model 172 clio sport and what it covers???
Cambelt is supposed be chnaged at 72k and 5 years whicevers easiler but IMo 4 years and 60k is a bvetter idea cars used on abnormal condition are supposed to be 3 years and 54k from memory. So you'll have to expect an expensive job if the cambelt needs doing as parts alone are £140 and then its 5.1 hour labour.

Service rules are here for what renault allowed IMO service more.

Warenties form Renault could be extended on cars which were still under the normal warenty for extra bit max is 5 years and 100k I'd never bother with any other aftermarket warently IMO never seen any good ones.

That a very unfair comment many dealers are superb with the car ok there a few ones who could be better but there loads of other places wich are even worse prices can be expensive but then again find a cheap proper dealership for any car.

Thanks for your advice mate. Alot of people have said about how poor the exhaust standard exhaust is? was there a fault with these or something??

also is there a thread anywhere on this forum with performance specs for 172's??

Cheers
