Security

  Mini Cooper S sport

Hi all

Im new to the forum, and I have just bought a Renault Clio 172 (was new March 2003), for what I think is a very good price (£8995).

My question is about vehicle security. I was told the car is fitted with deadlocks, but I have read elsewhere that this model actually isnt. It comes with immobiliser and alarm fitted as standard, but I am slightly worried that it will be easy to break into. I have to park it on a public street overnight, and as you know, its a very striking-looking car.

Its being delivered next week, and I cant wait - its the most stunning car Ive ever owned (previous cars: Nova 1.4 SR, Tigra 1.4, Peugeot 306 1.6 and Im about to get rid of my Ford Ka!!)

Like most cars, they are really easy to break into. Your alarm should go off of course, but your average AA man will get into your car in a few seconds. The immobiliser makes a pretty good job of preventing it being driven off though.

Welcome to the forum by the way :D

Oh great - Ill remember to leave nothing inside it then.....!

I know most cars are easy to get into if thieves want to - lets hope Ill hear the alarm if anyone does then! The thing is, with my Ka, I dont really care if anyone breaks in - but when I get the Clio I certainly will...

Thanks for the welcome :)

Get a wheel lock, also if your really worried, leave ya glove box open with no contents in it, may go a little way to deter a break-in.

Thanks for your advice.

Just to clarify, it is correct that the 2003-built 172 doesnt have deadlocks? Im amazed if not, I thought theyd be fitted as standard.

Moving this to Interior Ice and Security..

Welcome to the Club, pretty sure the 172s dont have deadlocks.

Get your windows coated with clear security film to stop someone smashing them easily and remove the doorlocks.

As the boot doesnt have one then at least that will minimise any damage to the body panels.

If they cant get in quickly through a door lock or by smashing a window then they might not hang around ..at least youll stop the opportunist ...if the person is any more hardcore then i would invest in a better immobiliser as the std one would be easy for a real car thief.

Dont put the stickers for the car alarm on the windows as this will allow thieves to break into car that they may know the alarms and leave the ones that they dont know...if they dont know then they might not be prepared.

mine sleeps in a garage with a G5 Clifford protecting it!

How about getting a Disklok? Im considering this, but also wondering if it would actually present a challenge to a car thief.

Im assuming G5 Cliffords are expensive........?

Std Clifford G5 650 Concept fitted for £399..diskloks are good for an opportunist but lets face it they normally nick ford fiestas and metros!

I dont think it will pose more than a minute or two for a car thief.

(look on the diskloks box and it will tell you how long it will stop a car thief for....i think its only a few minutes)

But as another item in the line of defense then might be worth it
