Serious engine mods

When haivng so called serious engine mods done, is it necessary to go for a stand alone ECU to achieve the best from your mods?

If you have the standard ECU re-mapped, how much more would you expect to gain from fitting the likes of Omex or Motec?

depends what you're having done, an OE ecu in some cases doesn't like boost etc

or if you fit throttle bodys to a car the oe ecu will struggle to control it
