Server Geeks

  Revels Mum & Sister
Where I work I have been buying HP Servers through a supplier for most of our Clients for a couple of years now.

However the supplier isnt in business anymore. So am thinking of maybe trying a different brand.

So suggestions to what you have used, reliability etc. Will be for a solicitors running some software with a SQL database, 25 users, remote access etc. Mainly for exchange and a file server

So what you gheys reccomned for me to research and any half decent suppliers

We have always used Dells here until we were forced to go with HP recently.

Never had any problems with them or their cover. Some of ours none critical servers are a good 8 years old now and still working away happily.....with the odd fan no longer working.

  Better than yours. C*nt.
Just moving over to HP now from Dell, purely because that's what group use now. No faults I can find at all!

Yep, Dell for me, got 5/6 now and not had any problems. Oldest is 5 years, been on 24/7, no probs ....touch wood .... all running 2003 server R2.

Also, I have found you can haggle on price with Dell .... even more so if you mention HP....

New ClioSport server is a HP. I'll get back to you after Sunday :p

Mainly used Dell before.. on everything, and they seem good. (Windows based).
Went HP for their superior Linux support..

dell if you want cheap units, they are mainly fujitsu siemens boxes.

Problem I have with them is delivery time and shipping costs, a week to wait for a server!

We use HP throughout for their next day availability, superior management functions such as ILO and smart start etc.

Rasclart, if you want pricing on HP then drop me an email davidkn at softcat dot com.

We are a HP preferred partner and I am the HP Business manager so I will sort you a good price.

thanks

If you had a certain budget to spend - would you splash out on a single all singing all dancing server or would you get two lesser servers and keep one as a backup (if it was a small network)?

depends, if using 2 servers you need to have some shared storage to be able to cluster etc, if you just want it as a spare then you might as well get a few parts in to be able to replace or get a good support level etc.

With a decent server these days pretty much everything can be doubled up so that the only real thing you can't is the motherboard so a decent server and a spare motherboard maybe?

HP-Compaq for us. The newer ones have had a few issues with the occasional 15k SCSI HDD, but apart from that, they are fine.

Dave - I had no idea you worked at Softcat, m8. We are regularly contacted by them to buy stuff. ;) I'll have to bear you in mind, the next time we're after another Proliant!

HP here too Rasclart :) Then again, like Dave, I work for a HP reseller. Can't fault them. :)

We're a HP house here also, we also supply HP to our customers.

I'll find out who we deal with if you like...

Just get a quote from Dell and then go to hp with it and voila HP for Dell prices, it makes me sad you never ask me this stuff anymore! :(

HP for us... most of our server builds aren't standard at all, so we have 14 (working) day waits on most kit :(

Doesn't help that we have to buy direct from HP either :(

you must work for a pretty big company to buy direct from HP, they have very few direct customers, very few.

We have stacks and stacks of Dell gear over 20+ sites. The main advantage I can see is that you get to deal directly with Dell and not some reseller. Our contract also allows us substantial discount on list price. I had a power supply failure on a server recently, a quick phone call and I had a brand new one on my desk in 2 and 1/2 hours!

Almost all our servers are HP, never really had any problems as far as I know.

Although a few of our sms site servers are now dells.

we use HP, Dell and a lot of Sun. I don't do much with the Sun kit but I prefer HP over the Dell.

Hahaha! LOL! It's Gap Ltd - in Blackburn on Partnership Way. I 'think' we may have ordered one thing from you some years back. Mainly a PCWB (sorry, DSGi) and Misco house for the most part....

Most of our servers here are custom built, however our main web-server is a Fujitsu Seimens beast, and we've never had a (hardware) issue with it, and have had it for years.

Have had it in bits a couple of times for RAM upgrades and installing new SCSI HDD's etc, and they seem pretty well made IMO.
