Server Woes/Electronics Help

running an old school proliant rack server here......although the cpu fan in the back is wayy too loud and getting on my nerves now....

its in a rack in the garage, so its cool enough, also the racks got fans on the rear so i thought simple enough il unplug it and disable the cpu fan warning in the bios....

thing is...there is no bios on proliants apparently, you have to use the 'smart start' cd to configure the server....ive done this but it dosent go into that much detail to disable warnings etc...

anyway i was trying to think of a simpler way of getting round this....

the cpu fan is connected with a 5 pin plug...although one of the pins is blanked off....

the 4 wires are [YELLOW][BLANK][RED][BLACK][BLACK]

is there any way i can cut this connector off, and solder a resistor or small circuit in place of it to make the server think the fan is there? the fan is '12v DC-1.0Amp'....

if anyones electronically minded and could think of a way round this it would be appreciated :)

apparently there is no way of getting into these proliant bios's even though there is one there, F2, F10, Del everything nothing works....

Yeh I can't remember in detail (or at all really lol) but the config utility was the only way to configure them. And it looks to be a fruity fan, and I don't think theres an easy way to fool it into thinking theres a fan attached either as they work off a pulse system for speed sensing afaik.

I assume you've tried it without and it alarms? They always tend to put stupid loud fans in them as they don't think about personal use, when I got one of my rackmount 3com level 3 switches it had the most stupid loud fans in the world in it. Soon changed them and it still seems to work 2 years on despite very decreased throughput.

Damn, your making me look at more stuff on ebay that I don't need now!

which model proliant is it? I dont' think they've got audible alarms (well our 5500s we used to have didnt', so all you'll probably get is an amber light on the front of the box, then boot & acknowledge the alarm from the front LCD panel (assuming it has one)

Alternatively just disconnect the amber light lol ;-)

there is no alarm, the system will not boot without it plugged in though..... just splurts out 'cpu fan fail' after POST and then shuts down....

got round it though by taking the blades off the fan so its just like a spindle spinning now lol....seems to be ok
