Shift Light Question

  Ziel Nurburgring

Does anyone know what the optimum revs is to change up in the 172/182s in each gear or where to find it?

Armed with this information, could you get the ECU (as i presume this is what controls the shift light function) programmed with the correct settings so it does become a Shift now your leaving the zone, rather than last chance chump im about to bounce?

Tadpole, wlecome to the club mate. I know you can use you head to know when you change up, that wasnt the question.

I asked if anyone actually knew the best RPM to change up at, and if the control unit for the shiftlight could be updated accordingly. I know the light is to far, but i was trying to make the light useful.

Looking in the 172 cup brochure the Peak power (BHP) is reached at 6250rpm and peak torque is reached at 5400rpm. Therefore there is very little to be gained in thrashing it into the 7250 limiter. Probably best to change up around 6600-6800 IMO.

Am i right in thinking that the shift light comes on earlier if the engine is colder?

I think your right. thought i had done some damage as when i went to change from 3rd to 4th the light came on earlier then I expected i.e around 6,800 iirc - thought it was warm enough but obviously not!

Probably be very handy to see a graph of the 172 power delivery to see how badly the power tails off after 6250

if you shift too early on a 172, you will drop too much below the magic 5500rpm in you next gear. I find changing on the shift light is about right.

(sorry this is not technical input mate, )
