What do you mean by important!? you need shocks if thats what you mean, but you dont desperatly need new (shorter sport) ones unless your lowering more than 40mm

Shocks smooth out or damp sudden movement/impulses in the suspension, basically they reduce the effect to the ride while travelling over rough ground. Without them the car would bounce around the road all over the place. If your lowering more than 40mm its best to get some uprated or matching ones. Keeping your originals will make them wear out quite quickly.
