Should i buy this 172?

  RB 182
A few of you know i saw a 2001 Y plate 172 with 58k on the clock for sale for £3395.

I went to look at it today, and it looks ok, few minor bits like a bit of a nick on the rear of the drivers seat, and wtf is with the steering wheel?! Its all minging, it leaves your hands black!

It looks like this:

Theres also no history with it, but receipts for work done, and no history of a cambelt change?

How hard are these belts to do, im a mechanic, and at what interval?

They said they'll put 12 months MOT on it, and sort the airbag light out (its on)

Should i or shouldn't i?!

Airbag light could be something like a loose connection under the passenger seat -mine does that or it could have been in a bump and been repaired and the computer hasn't been reset or changed yet.
The lack of history and the alloys suggest it has been thrashed perhaps, I would get an independant mechanic to go go over it and hpi it before parting with any cash.

Im a mechanic, and ive done all the basic checks, plus its HPI clear

Fair enough,
Don't know if this applies to the ph1 Clios like it does to the ph2's like mine. If its the Service light and the airbag light thats on, wiggle the wires under the front of the passenger seat dodgy connection on mine.
Still could have been bumped, some people don't go through the insurance and repair it themselves or a cheap garage.
If its straight its a good deal, the wheels however make me think its been ragged. If I was in the market I would spend a little bit more for an enthusiast owned original example, but I usually get ripped off!

Ok cheers, yeah the service light and airbag light are on, even though it was serviced in march at 55k?

I think for the money its a good deal, ill gradually put a few quid into it to make it nice, sort the seat out, bit of trim missing etc

The service light is on because the airbag light is on. The service light isn't a service indicator, it indicates a fault which in this case is the airbag light.

  Lots of Alfas
A fiddle with the wires under the seat will cure the serv and airbag light (very common problem), it seems a very good price for the mileage. The cambelt should be changed every 72k and the accessory belt every 36k. I would advise to change them asap, most people change them around 60k. The cambelt is quite hard to do and there are also 3 rollers that need replacing and 1 on the accessory belt. Its quite a rare colour, the steering wheels do need cleaning weekly as crap sticks to them and dont be suprised if the wheel looks very warn around the top. Youve probably already checked but inspect the driveshaft gaitors, check the cond of the exhaust and just make sure the jacking points arnt too bent.

for the money you won't get better or faster shall I say. However, the problems seem minor to fix so it's your call. You need some standard alloys too, those on it are absolute bilge!!!

£3395 is a good deal, get him down to £3250 even if it is abit rough round the edges, proving its straight its a good deal.
I was under the impression that the cambelt was 72k or 5yrs, just had mine done. Also did the accessories belt the other day because it was screeching like a b**ch in the cold.

Mine is in good nick and has similar mileage/age
It's had all serious stuff done - cam belt etc

I wouldnt take any less than £4800 for it as a guide.

The steering wheels fall apart yes, but then the newer Mk2 ones melt in the summer ha ha

I've said it before I'll say it again get rid of the bus wheel and GET A MOMO ;)

I don't like wheels either.

£450 for a new set from renault plus £250 for tyres to go with them.

Gotta agree, the wheels look terrible, but they'll fetch money on e-bay.
Cars a re better with a service history, it gives you piece of mind, but even the best looked after cars can go wrong, just take it for a real good test drive.

Ok guys, cheers so far!

Dont worry, the wheels will be the first thing to go!! The ride is terrible! New tyres on them mind, so should make enough money to buy some standards!

The exhaust is a full new system, standard too, and its got new brakes on. Checked air con too, freezing cold, and i started it up from cold and no smoking, then when it was warm i took it for a good drive along long staight rds, and bends, and it pulled and went round no problems

The lack of history doesnt really bother me, its been serviced im sure, just no book. If i got it anyhu, id give it a full overhaul, oil, new belts, pulleys, filters, brake fluid, coolant the works. I know working in the trade that cars that havent got a visible history are normally bargains, because people want history!

I've said it before I'll say it again get rid of the bus wheel and GET A MOMO ;)
Once compulsory driving tests are required every 2 years and all the morons around me can drive properly I'll risk loosing my airbag but until then ...

So you'd prefer to have a pyrotechnic device go off in your face than not? ;) I honestly dont see why people worry about losing them.

My best mate is still alive thanks to an airbag.

I'll take a risk.

Anyway back on topic...

There are some real minters out there for this money.

Good price shame about the service history , its what a buyer may look for when you sell .

  Tangoed Works
Looks pony, but if you can sort any probs that may occur cheap, it looks like a bargain. Offer 3k I would say.
