Should I change the cambelt for my 172?

I am from Far East. My Dec 2001 built Clio 172 had done 33,600miles. Should I change the cambelt when it hit 5 years old or wait until it hit 72k?

Also I called the Renault local dealer and it cost approx. 570ukp included labour and parts (water pump and cambelt). Is that sounds OK???

I am sure I will change the aux belt soon.

Thanks!

Is 570ukp a bit too much??

nope! mine was 650 at renault for cambelt and aux belt change

not only needs new cambelt but pulleys and maybe tensioners if theyre siezed also. its a big job.

if you've no warently I'd chnage at 4 year s or 60k whatever happens earlier if it breaks its going to be expensive so might as well chnange it.
Its p[art of the 72k service so which cambelt might only cost £250 the service is another £250 etc at a dealership.
Rentech/Gdi will do the service for less than that but make sure the garage you use knows about the car as some even profeshional places have done the cambelt wrong before and damaged the engine soon afterwards by seting timing wrong.

Edde, he is from Hong Kong.

I do not know the current Renault dealer since we dropped it, so i do not know the quality of service and training, or if the old staff is still working in the service station. But i would not feel happy about using local HK garages. I'd rather pay a little bit more and get the dealer to do it, because if it does blow up at least they have the financial backing to fix it. Small garages will just fob you off.

As for pricing, try bargain with them a little. Renault dealers have a book time for each job, but they can choose their own hourly labour rates, so the price can vary alot between dealers.

In the beginning, I called their parts department to check the price. I am surprise the water pump and cambelt kit cost similar to UK. But when I called the service department for labour + parts cost, it came out at 570.00ukp.

But still, I will bargain and see if they can give me further discount even I am still afraid they may do it wrong. The reason is - they are new dealer, the only Renault they are selling is Scenic. I heard that Renault usually don't treat the Asian dealer nicely.

Renault factory dont treat the asian agents well, its why we left. But the dealer should treat the public customer well.

I dont think you should need the water pump changed?

If the same staff is working there, i dont see why they shouldnt be able to change the belt, its very simple.

I'm in the same boat...I have a car which has 15k on the clock which is going to be 5yrs old next year and am going to do the cambelt anyway.

Renault wanted £600 to do the cambelt.....I shall be going elsewhere
