should i upgrade from a 1.2 to a 1.4?

  172 and vw passat
Iv narly completed my 1st year no claim and was thinking of upgrading to a 1.4 clio from my 1.2, was thinking of this as i feel that the 1.2 engine just feels cheap and think that i would be happier with a 1.4. Im will be 18 when i upgrade so dont realy want to jusp to a 2ltr like most you guys/gals as il get slated on insurance.

sound like a good idea?

cheers for the opinions :p

I wouldn't bother tbh a 1.2 to a 1.6 or 2.0 yeah, but not a 1.4

I went fiesta 1.1 - 1.8 clio 16v (valver seemed pradid when I first drove it)

well iv got a m8 that has a 1.4megane and he gets alot more mpg than me so thinming it might save me abit of ££ too.

think it would be a wasted effort...power gains would be marginal for the effort involved.
saying that though its your car pal ;)

  M2 Competition
Complete waste of time. Below motorway speeds they'll feel exactly the same mate (i used to own a 1.2, my mate an identical 1.4)

Keep your car another year and upgrade to a 2.0.

possibly true. :D got rs replica skirts sitting, but not sure if i should get them sprayed and fitted or just sell them and save it for the faster car, wasent planning on getting a 2ltr till i was 20-21 tho. :S

What about a dci 80? very very economical, £35 tax, feel a lot quicker than a 1.2 16v and also the option of a remap to 110bhp, if i was to get another non rs mk2 clio this would probly be the one i go for.

not to keen on getting a diesel, was thinking of getting the 1.4 as i know i would like to keep it awee bit longer and i can slightly mod it.

  Never above 25mpg
You'll be paying a slight bit extra for the tax. Imo it's not worth it unless you get some nice upgrades too like A/C, and leccy everything!!
ATM Im doing 35-37mpg round town, and my friend's 1.2 is doing 42ishmpg round town. I know which one Id stay with.
Plus it's cheaper insurance.

I was thinking of getting a 2.0 in march but atm it's just not feasible

I'd go to a 1.6 over a 1.4 if you were to upgrade. They insurance isn't bad, tax is £79 for 6 months and standard I got 40+MPG ALL the time. They have all the toys and uprated suspension and ARB standard.

i wouldnt waste the money on that change chief.
the change is worth it ,i had 1.28v and then upgraded to ma 1.216v 6 months later and that was an upgrade then went to the 1.6 and its an upgrade aswell its newer lowermilage and nippy but doesnt use as much fuel as a sport. i would recomend changing but it is hard to come by a decent 1.6 i luckily found myne the day i sold my 1.2 and went and got it that day but i was also lucky in that i paid wayway below adverage and couldnt of turned it down

  Shed.
I find the 1.2 is just annoyingly slow, the gears dont help either. Trying to get in a gap on a motorway before the exit when theres a bloody lorry in the way can be a right pain.

move to a 1.4 and youll find it pulls better and will go further every gear because of the gear ratios. But theyre still not brilliant. They do have a lot of grunt to them i must admit.

if you can find a decent 1.6 16v and can afford one then go for that, they dont exactly hang about, and can put up some kind of fight against the sports, although the sport will piss on it when it comes to a straight.

Alternativly, you could always upgrade to a newer 1.2 16v like i did and just hang on for another year or 2 untill insurance becomes less than 2k lol. i did that and ive now got a 4.5k car with 21.5k on the clocks to sell when it comes to buying new car. im now looking at a 172 as i can afford it more easily than i could at the age of 18.

id go for a dci if i was changing for the save in cash and much more torque, wouldnt bother with a 1.4, possibly worth looking at teh 1.6 if your minds set though as insurance isnt much different and the engines very similar, extra torque of it is worth it though.

well, il have alook about to find a good condition 1.6, as i probs would be happyer with that than going for a 2ltr at 20, as the petrol and tax would hit hard, and if it came to it could just mod the 1.6 to look like the 2ltr and still be happy with the pull. :p

Its just the 1.2 feels cheap on the gears has no pull and sucks for overtaking, but my car is sorta mint(-the scraches) only got 30k on the clock not bad for a 2002 car :p

  ur megane r26
mate stick with the 1.2 i got a 1.2 and it is still very nippy, i have no trouble in overtaking, you just need to know how to do it properly lol get the 1.2 breathing right and it will be all good and you will have more money then
