Silly Quick 182Cup?

My 182Cup has had a hard life. I've given it death from 9 miles on the clock and it's just been getting faster since. The most recent 'boost' was just after the 24k service. It's always been able to keep up with cars that should have owned it.

Today I had a play with a Leon CupraR. He brought it on, all over my ass and up for a play. We both gave it death. I was pulling slightly in every gear at every speed below the ton.

Now, I thought these were rapid. Is my 182Cup a rapid example?

the quickest clios i've driven have been 172 cups on over 60K miles with full exhausts, vipers and R-sport ECU's

its the classic thing with renaults, they get faster the more milage they have (they blow up eventually!)

Cool mate, well either way this Leon driver pretty much got 'owned' so I'm guessing my 182 is a quick one? It's been feeling stupid fast lately.

when they get to 20K they get faster for some reason, when they hit 50/60K they become missiles

I concur, not seen a 182 that can touch the above for pace even with all this fancy cams & matched manifolds and s**t...

I have to say that owning both the 182 and LCR that it doesn't *feel* as though there's much between them at all, and I would actually say that the 182 feels the quicker of the two (both standard, except an exhaust on the clio), however that may well be down to the raw nature of the 182. I would certainly say that the LCR needs to be driven correctly to keep it on boost between shifts, otherwise the clio would be off into the distance, as it pulls better from low revs (2-3K). Assume the balance will change once the Leon's remapped though...

i'm glad you've said that.........my cars coming to 55k, full system was fitted yesterday, viper's been on about 3 months and the r-sport is getting unlocked as we speak!

Yeah pretty much. Always gave it 15 mins for everything to heat up though. I reckon it's a better engine for it, too :evil: I've always had the feeling that it's quicker than it should be, maybe mine has a damn good manifold match?

That stands to reason though really I think. a 172Cup pushing virtually the same power as a 182 is always going to be quicker. Like for like the 172Cup will always be quicker unless the 182 has been on a diet. Lets face it, There isnt really 10bhp between the cars anyway as standard is there? More like 7-8 probably

I presume they use the same stack of cogs?

Sadly not mate, it's not something I've ever been attracted to tbh, but I guess it might answer my questions

When Autocar first reviewed the 182Cup they managed 6.3 and said they wouldnt be surpised if a well run in good example, with a good launch, could be a 6 second Clio. Maybe mine is just that? He he

That 6.3 was for a full fat 182, 0-100 17, so close to 6secs is a possiblity.

I have a copy of the 0-100-0 autocar challenge and the 182cup was slightly slower to 60 (6.4) but faster to 100 (16.7)

I have found my 182 keeps up with things that should beat it, I was glued to the back of a TT 225bhp version and a WRX Impreza on the other hand though I was behind a 406 coupe once and i could not catch it, there was nothing in it

cupra could have been an FR as they were kitted up as LCR later on the production run....

And thats a problem why?

IME, according to owners, EVERY type of car needs 60,000 miles before its run in by which time it gains 100 bhp over new.

Snake oil IMO.

The LCR could have been a 210bhp version and not the 225.

Either way I don't think there is much in it before the ton mark. I think EVO quotes the LCR to be 6.9 to 60, and the 172 Cup to be 6.5. (Don't know about the 182 Cup)

Not the review I read mate, it was specifically the 182Cup as they mentioned the weight. They certainly suggested that they tested the car at 6.3, but they may have been a bit playfull with the truth perhaps. Not that it makes any difference really

The road test of 6.3 was deffo for the full fat, but if the full fat can do it in 6.3 then so can the cup.

The sport Clios and LCR are almost identical as long for pace as long as the Clio is in the right gear, after all, the LCR has 200+ ft/lb from 2,200RPM. When it gets bendy the LCR is much softer than the Clio and much more prone to understeer.

I know because I owned one for a year...

Well without wishing to split hairs, the road test I read was defo for the Cup, I remember the pictures with the washer jet blanks. Maybe they said the 182 was 6.3 so a well launched Cup might be a 6 second car. It was a long time ago

This was kind of the original point of my post mate. I was defo pulling away slowly in every gear and I dont think I should have been. I wonder if my Clio is one of the lucky quick ones

My 172 was keeping up with MarkCup's with the above spec. I havent any ECU mods yet!

I just did a 0-60 in my standard 172 and timed it @ 6.59 secs!!

With a good start.
And i was told 7.2 secs! PAH!!
And there was worrying about the wheels screwing up the acceleration!

took mine out last night for a spin and fck me it was flying, only 8k on the clock so must have a fair whack of loosening up to do still. Handling is so sharp as well. felt quicker than the Elise i drove last week
